OT: Father/Son Project - What Accessory Do You want Designed?

idea

Did I ever mention I like the word "ideas"?

black anodized aluminum stock , forearm and rail system. with enough speed holes machined into the pieces to reduce weight keep structural integrity, and look way cool, cartridge holder machined into the stock, inserted top and bottom, bottom opening sleeve locking folding bayonet in forestock on right side, surefire mount on left(reverse for lefties)

Since i have support for a short heatshield, I bet you could make a 12.5 that will also fit a 14...Im slightly more partial to the 14inch length barrels myself, but i bet an 11inch length shield that the taper would fit on both sizes and would sell like hotcakes.

I'm kinda noticing a trend here.

How about a tactical barrel shroud for short (12.5") to long (18.0") barrels that is capable of mounting "scout" type optics and/or AR type sights?
One version may be extended over the receiver (but still only connected to the barrel).

I want the project to be "doable" within my sons capabilities as well as being able to build a prototype.

Something relatively simple that won't cost an arm and a leg.

Note - I do not like crap equipment so what I am thinking is on the higher end of the quality scale. (i.e. I'm not going to compete with Tac-Star or Mosseberg on price or quantity).

Thinking "modular" design to allow flexibility of core components and "options" that allow the user to configure as needed (or just plain wants).

What do you think of this?

Hello,

My son wants to learn the Computer Aided Design Software package I use for work (Solidworks). I got to thinking that I'd like to design and market an accessory for the shotgun segment. I could then show him the process of what has to be done to research, develop, model, and then manufacture the part. It could be a redesign of an existing product or something new.
Would be for the Remington 870 as that is what I have access to as a pattern for the design (i.e. can take measurements from it). Can always "port" it over to other types. Question: If you had the time and resources what practical shotgun accessory would you like to see developed? Len

I'd like to see a slightly longer version of the SPEEDFEED pistol grip (to provide a legal non-restricted OAL on a 14" barelled 870 - and without the use of any spacers or slingplates).

A longer pistol grip could be more like the grip on the original (Jim Wilson designed and manufactured) Wilson Witness Protection shotgun SBS/AOW, and also provide the requisite OAL to keep all those HP9-1 and 870 owners legal.

After market 18" barrel with chokes & iron sights mounted on the barrel for the Mossberg 500, I know you said Remington 870

somthing like that is allready in the works by us, its along time coming as its not cheap to do.
we allready have the long rail and stock adaptor consept and many hear have them allready.
But a system where you can use with or without a AR15 type stock adaptor, is in the works, its a bigger projects then we figgered it would be.
But its good enought to be Pat pending in the US, so i hope it does well.
Will not post any pics of the prototype work at this time as i do not want anyone to take any of our ideas.

As this is a design excercise and not an attempt at making a go of the firearms business I'm thinking I'll build a better heat shield and forego the rail and other "accruments".

As an aside:

Patent's only apply in the country they are issued. Usually, the cost of patents is such that you will only apply for it in the country most of your potential sales will occur. That is why you see numerous clones of products that are being sold in other countries that don't recognize the patent.
Technically, a third world manufacture can copy your product "exactly" and sell it in Canada and you have little "legal" recourse if you haven't patented it in Canada. In that case most companies rely on their reputation and the purchaser's patriotism to buy "local".

From the comments I've seen regarding your products it appears you make some pretty good kit. Nice to see a fellow Canuck doing well in the international market. I wish you the best on your new product and look forward to its release.

Cheers,

L

keep us posted on the short 12.5-14" heatshield concept.

Im quite surprised no one has done it yet...

The regular 18" barrel heatshields sell FAST. If you look at Marstars website they are sold out of all the ones they carry.

Yes its sad to say but the US market is the bigest, for us and anyone in the gun parts, biz.
Yes i do understand that unless you have patents everywhere you dont stand a chance.
The only think you can do it go after the imported of said fake item and hit them hard.
we did this allready with an airsoft company, sent a letter to the canadain importer, worked well.
Anyway solid works is a good program, we have used it, but right now we are using Pro E.
we should all brain storm and come up wit has many canadain ideas as we can.

Is anybody willing to post some detailed pictures of their heat shields (TAC-STAR, MOSSY, etc..) So I can get an idea of what they look like up close.

Would especially like to see how they mount the shield to the barrel.
I have several ideas kicking around but have never actually seen a heat shield up close.

i got rid of mine because i got rid of my 18" barrel..

its clamped with 2 hex screws/nuts at each mount which is underneath the barrel, 1 at the far back right against the receiver, one near the front, both different sized to match the barrel taper of course.

much like a barrel clamp. Someone has to have pics here...

How about some extended ported tactical chokes that fit the 870 series? Like the one that comes on the new tactical model. Can't find anyone who can get one here unless you buy the whole gun.

Just an FYI doesnt the new Grizzly 15" barrels come with a short heatshield?

Heck I'd buy the thing off of someone if they wanted to get rid of it.

But...maybe someone can give you some pics or let you take a look at the design?

A spring loaded bayonet with the spring release on the foregrip, that would be sick. Or maybe on the receiver somewhere close to your trigger finger.
