so, i'm a member NCRRA / Connaught. looking for an alternative since at times, i'd like to go shoot when my club doesn't have the range available. checked out the RA Centre and wasn't impressed even though it's VERY convenient (like 5mins from my place, door to door) - just way too expensive and i can't for the life of me figure out when i can and can't go there to shoot.

EOHC? went there once, seems relatively 'free' and i can shoot almost anytime and price seems OK.

others? anything that's indoor? ideally would allow me to shoot jacketed, but if not i can deal with just lead.

i live near the RA Centre, so a 45min driving time from there is my limit (i'd say EOHC is just barely inside of that).

Other than Connaught, the RA center and EOHC, the only other one I know of it Stittsville Shooting Range. Went there for the first time last week. The facilities are good, 2 rifle ranges, one out to 200m and the other to 300m. They also have numerous pistol ranges as well as a pro-shop that sells guns, ammo and reloading equipment. However, they are not a key club like EOHC. There are only open certain days.

SFFGC is almost exactly 45 minutes from you.
Open 365 days a year and only $125/year.

more details? looking at SFFGC page... shooting time slots? restrictions on ammo type? probation periods? if it's $125 a year and i can shoot nearly anytime (daytime), then i'd be VERRYYYY interested.

Grenville Fish and Game. A bit of a drive (bottom of the 416), but membership is under $100, and they have 25yd, 25/50rd, 100yd, skeet, trap, and another 100yd and indoor pistol being built.

shooting time slots? No.

restrictions on ammo type? No tracer.

probation periods? Maybe its changed, but not when I started.

I shoot at Stittsville regularly, it's pricey but I like it there and it's close to home for me(Kanata). Unless you shoot pistol, there is no probation period, takes a little while to get enough people for a pistol course unfortunately. You have to be a member to shoot pistol, but if the RA centre is too expensive, then Stittsville will be too steep too. Hours are wed through friday for members, weekends are open to public.

ya, i shoot pistol and only pistol. is stittsville the one that costs somewhere from 300 to 500 a year? the RA is something like 200, plus you gotta be a member of the RA itself for 30 or so, plus a gun safety course for 40 (hey wait, didn't i already do that for my RPAL? idiots...), so RA is around 300. and i can't figure out their schedule at all - no idea when i can just shoot at my own leisure and when it's "controlled". if it was indoor, 25m (or maybe 50m!!!), allowed jacketed in all common handgun calibers, and 24/7 access, i'd be all over it for $300. but it's not as far as i know.

It was about 500-600 for my wife and I for rifle/pistol at Stittsville. AFAIK the pistol course is mandated by the province, so everyone has to take it, every time you join a new club. I like stittsville because you can show up anytime during business hours, the on site store is handy and Linda(the owner) is great to chat with.

If you want to check out the range its 20 bucks on the weekends for the day.

Hours are Weekdays 10:00 - legal dark, Saturday 10:00 - 17:00, Sunday 10:00 - 15:00. Unlock the gate, sign in and shoot.

No probation period, but I believe you have to take their pistol course so they can apply for your ATT.

Lots of times I have been the only one shooting...

Smiths Falls Fish and Game club is more than an hour from Ottawa, it costs $125/year. Grenville Fish and Came Club is 55 mins from your place, it's only $65 per year. But it only has a 100 yard rifle range, it does have a few nice pistol ranges and an archery trail tho.

Each range/club has its peculiarities. EOHC, Smiths Falls and Grenville are about equidistant from the centre of town. I like EOHC's libertarian style, Smith's Falls rifle range and Grenville's club house. Stittsville is closer, has a shop but has more restrictions than I prefer. Connaught (NCRRA) is a true club with preferred access to a military long-range. In the end, I chose EOHC.

EOHC is the place to go.

If you don't like old codgers telling you how to shoot, avoid the RA Center club like the plague that it is. That place almost completely turned me off of shooting until I discovered the EOHC...

Seldom anyone there at any given time, and you can set up the targets to your liking.

Grenville is great, only restriction is no shooting before 9am which for me isn't a problem.
