My GF Janice and I just started shooting. At the moment we are both shooting the same savage mkII FVXP

These are the best of our groups so far:

50 yards
Federal Champion 40g hv
off a bench
with a swiveling bi-pod and sandbag
4x scope that came with the Savage MKII FVXP

I'm unsure how groups are measured. I measured between the two furthest points. Should it be measured on the longest edge of the rectangle?

Since we are both new to shooting we don't know how good or bad these groups are and how we can improve. What are some good methods to make the most of our time at the range? Should we see improvements if we keep shooting these targets with the same ammo?

If I had to guess what my biggest flaw is right now I'd say it's inconsistent eye relief. I know the rifle out shoots me as Janice out shot me with the same rifle. How much better should she expect with the same rifle and ammo?

Should we buy some Eley next time we go, I've already invested in a large quantity of the Federal Champion.

Thanks for your opinions and suggestions.

I find or I should say the wife finds the Winchester 555 or 333 shoot best in our Mark II's. Give them a try, they shot a lot better than the federal in our two Mark II's.

They shoot great out of my marlin 60 and savage 24 as well, only problem with them is I find them really dirty and the marlin starts jamming after 40-50 shots, but accuracy is great.

Looks like you will need more practice to keep up with your GF, her groups are more consistent.

Honestly, your both doing great, keep up the shooting with various ammo and your gun will tell you which does the best.

You are both doing very well. Group size seems consistant and just slightly right so I see sight adjustments in your future.
I use Blaser in my .22's no problems with FTF's (failure to fire) as I have with some other brands. You will fine different ammo will give a variety of results so plink away and enjoy.

The interesting thing about .22's, and rimfires in general, seems to be that each rifle likes different ammunition. I have a Remington 597 that absolutely loves Bulk Blazer ammo. I've spoken with other 597 owners in the LGS's who say their 597's hate the stuff (inaccurate, FTE, FTF's) but love the Winchester white box bulk, which mine is terribly inaccurate with. Buy some 50 packs of 22LR from various manufacturer's and see what the rifle likes.
