friend of mine owns this rifle. been sitting in the back of his safe for a while now because he lent it to someone some how they did something that made a round explode out of the chamber. bolt.receiver and barrel are unscathed but i can see a small spring stuck out from the left side of the cocking peace. seems like its missing a retainer of some kind. sure enough if cocked and bumped it will let loose and uncock. does anyone know what peace is missing so i can get this working again for my friend? thanks so much and have a good day.IMG_5199.jpgIMG_5200.jpgIMG_5208.jpgIMG_5210.jpgIMG_5211.jpgIMG_5212.jpg

I have a Midland 2100 .30-06 (retired) that I managed to keep my family fed with moose & deer meat for many years. After getting into handloading, I worked up some pretty "warm" handloads for the last 10 years that it was in service and this old '03-A3 action just kept on keeping on. Makes me wonder what happened your buddy's rifle? The only thing I never liked about this old rifle is the crappy Midland stock design that made a stiff 180gr load feel like touching off an ultra-light .375H&H loaded to the max!

I might have the bits. Will check tomorrow.

A Midland isn't a Springfield action. It uses a slightly modified 03A3 bolt assembly in a cast receiver that has the footprint of a 98 Mauser. The trigger mechanism is a commercial 98 unit with a modified sear. The barrel is a 98 sporter with a slightly longer shank. Trigger guard assembly is an aluminum sporter 98 Mauser unit. Stock is a Sile (Italy). PH was able to produce an economy rifle using available parts, the surplus bolt being a real cost saver.
The breeching is interesting - the bolt was intended for a coned breech, but the Mauser type barrel is flat faced, with no internal collar in the receiver.

How did someone get the thing to fire with the action open? Was the bolt sleeve rolled over, allowing the firing pin to project?

As far as i can tell the bolt sleeve retainer was broke off. He went to chamber a round and when the case lined up the bolt was bumped and the sleeve snapped shut hitting the primer and setting the round off. The bolt sleeve lock seems to be an identical piece on this and on a 1903. With the lock gone the bolt just needs a tap and the fireing pin drops. But it worked when he lent it to his friend and the best story i have is what i can come up with looking at the case and rifle. I know the blast ruined the scope.

The bolt sleeve is a Springfield unit, less safety assembly. The safety hole is plugged.
I'll check if I have the 2 pieces when I go to the shop.

The lock is broken off and the spring is ruined. Let me know. Your my favorite mod you allways seem to be around when i have stupid problems. Thanks boss!
