Wildlife biologists from the University of Alberta and the University of Minnesota have given high marks to B.C.'s grizzly bear management, including the grizzly bear hunt lottery that attracts foreign hunters each year.

B.C.'s management program has "attained a high level of rigor and a solid scientific underpinning modified as necessary by professional judgment, the experts concluded in a report commissioned by the forests ministry and released this week.

The report makes 51 recommendations for improving grizzly habitat protection and estimating population and harvest level in each wildlife management region of the province.

The report recommends the government increase public consultation on grizzly bear harvest management. It also recommends B.C. "establish objectives for accommodating both hunting and viewing of grizzly bears, and investigate whether conflicts exist."

When has wildlife management paid any attention to scientific reports. He who whines loudest usually prevails.

Anyone who ever wants to go grizzly hunting in BC, should give high praise to our Liberal premier, Kristi Clark.
She stood firm against tremendous opposition at the last election, where something like 85% of the BC electorate were against trophy hunting of grizzly bears.
If the NDP get in at next years election, grizzly hunting in BC will be over.
This scientific report just out is the best thing possible that could have happened for, not only grizzly hunters, but hunters in general.
A few years ago Kristi Clark got three world class grizzly experts from outside of Canada, to do a thorough report on grizzly and the effect on them of BC's strict hunting regulations. In the past the BC government has used DNA sampling, using barb wire around baiting areas to catch grizzly hair, then have it tested to see how many different bears were coming to each bait station. The government figures were something like 12 to 14,000 grizzly in the province, but one or two very vocal, tree hugging, save our animals biologists, would always maintain the government didn't know how many bears and would always say the real population was less than half that many.
It was great that this highly scientific group found the BC population of grizzly to be about 15,000.
Getting world class scientists to make this unbiased report was the greatest thing a provincial government could do, to properly manage a highly controversial species.

what you are saying is valid everywhere and NDP can cut a lof of hunting ...

Hunting of grizzly bears, especially trophy hunting of the biggest oldest bruins, will not only bring in millions of dollars to the economy but it in itself creates an economy around wildlife because of the fact that it becomes valuable monetarily. When wildlife has value, it becomes worth it to protect.

I have spent many years at the University of Manitoba and studied research methods, statistical analysis and conducted research myself. I can tell you that grizzly bear population numbers are being extrapolated from a smaller sample size. This isn't always an accurate method and generally has a high margin of error because of environmental and human factors that influence population age and structure from year to year.

I do however believe BC has the highest standards of any province in Canada when it comes to wildlife and it's sustainable management. There is one problem with placing a high trophy value on grizzly bears and that is the strong incentive it creates to supply a hunt for pay. There may be considerable push by outfitters and hunters to over-kill bears, which will decrease the quantity of the population and eventually draw down the supply as smaller and younger bears are chosen as "trophy" bears because the real trophy class bears have been killed off due to less stringent hunting laws and outfitter standards because of the fact that the bears are so valuable and demand will inevitably outstrip supply to the point that we will compromise our sound management principles simply to make a dollar.

Outfitters...tell me, how much does one grizzly bear hunt sell for in BC??

More than I can afford even if priced in Cdn dollars..............but I don't need a guide. :)
I suspect both sides fudge the numbers and it does come down to dollars & cents for those on both sides of the issue.

BC has extensively studied grizzlies over the last few years. There is a better handle on grizzly populations than any other big game species in BC.

I do ho

Grizzly hunts are in the $10K-20K range.

Outfitters are on a quota and residents are on LEH.

Umchorn is back... No risk of over harvest in BC, LEH success is tightly monitored with compulsory inspections, and outfitters have a known number of bears on quota that can't be exceeded. There are rate limits as well where you can't harvest more than 1/3rd of your 5 year allocation in a given year without applying for special permission from the director. Combined with quick reporting on LEH harvest the regional biologists know exactly where they're at, at a given time.

Grizzlies are doing exceedingly well in BC, however the hunt will likely still end due to misguided public opinion. H4831 is dead right about the Clark government, they've kept it alive, the NDP will be a disaster if they get in. Grizzly hunts in BC range from $15,000 to $30,000US depending where you're hunting. Milligan and Bolen Lewis are sold out at $40k+ Canadian all in after fees and peripherals. Some inland mountain hunts can be half that.

But everybody knows grizzly bears never die of old age or natural causes , they just live on and on,so if you ban hunting, they just keep on living forever so the nice tourists can take pictures of them....course we won't mention the fact that cub predation by older boars is one of the biggest causes in cub mortality( that is just 'nature') but if you remove a few big boars that allows more Cubs to survive

Can;t wait to read more from or Saskatchewan expert on all things wildlife!!!

Thank You for this.
I spent the last 4. minutes wiping my I-pad clean of greased bacon and Yukon gold fried spuds....
Haters are gonna hate and until there is a clear result the government will, win the election on this ( grizzly bear )platform it will remain on a back burner somewhere simmering away.
Clear results of how the animal is doing in the Wild will be skewed by all parties involved.
Look what happened to that C/O in BC who failed to carry out his Supiriors Orders to destroy to BB cubs because of their habituation to humans....

It will be a Very Cold Day in HELL before I giv cudos to KC and her BC Liars!!

Rob

Whatever you think of the BC Liberals they are the only party with a hope of forming a government BC can survive, and popular or not a functioning economy is their #1 goal. Good governments, or even reasonable ones, are seldom popular. Irresponsible ones sadly are. If BC votes in an NDP government again and pulls an Alberta, friends in Ontario will hear me scream.

It's a real shame GOABC and the Libs threw resident hunters under the bus with the allocation fiasco. They alienated many of their traditional supporters.

Totally agree. It was a stupid fight to pick that exploded out of proportion to make things worse, and I'd bet more than half the GOABC membership didn't agree with it including me. I actually signed the petition as a resident despite being an outfitter. I just pray folks are smart enough to realise the NDP is provincial suicide and horrible for everyone who hunts, resident or outfitter.
