Howdy all.One of my new never fired m14s has a over indexed barrel. The set screw was loose (never seen one like this before) and the barrel came undone by hand.Scary eh?So after a couple of months of the run around and getting my rifle back exactly the same way loose barrel and screw, what would be the best way to get the sights to align?
I know when it comes time to tighten it up I have to worry about making sure the op rod is still aligned properly.
I guess I could use this one as a designated scoped rifle and not worry.

Or maybe I'll leave it until the Edmonchuck group hug meeting and see what our great teachers have to suggest.
Well off to work.

I have the same problem, my front sight is to the right 3-5 degrees ~

I have taken out the barrel set screw, so now

-How do I move the barrel???

Can I put it in a bench vice and try and move it and then put the set screw back in????

What are my options for DIY?

Thanks

If you are going to do this you want a barrel vice and a receiver wrench. DO NOT try to just clamp it in a vice and move it with a big wrench. You will wreck your finish and possibly your receiver. If you have the tools then yes, put it in the vice, use a pipe extender on your receiver wrench and turn the barrel the correct amount.

If you have access to anyone on the boards with the tools it is an easy fix. We have done several at the West Coast Support Group meetings.

As far as the one that is overindexed you are probably going to need to peen the barrel shoulder to extend its length and give it more tightness. Walt Kuleck recommends peening it using a lathe setup so this might be a sendout job. He also suggests that a different barrel or receiver might be required.

Shims are highly unrecommended as you are changing your headspace when you shim the barrel forward.

millwright - if your barrel is only hand tight, don't shoot it.
It could likely be breeched up by upsetting the shoulder, which, in effect, shortens the shank a bit, so that the barrel can be torqued to index. This upsetting can be done with a roller tool, or with a small hammer.
Or, the shoulder can be turned back, and a breeching washer installed.
Once a barrel is torqued in to index, throw the setscrew away - or, if the hole bothers you, shorten it, and put it in as a filler.

Jacobcatz - Indexing a barrel isn't difficult, BUT, the correct tools are essential.

Oh, it will not be fired until its better.thanks for the tips guys.I was hoping that I wouldn't have to fix it.So much for the great warranty.Oh well life goes on.
