I was at the range on friday and there was a guy who just bought a new 300 win mag. He sat down and just started to shoot as fast as he could. He could not of been there for more than ten min and shot about 50-55 rounds (just under three boxes). I was a little supprised, I thought you were supost to "breakin" a new barrel. This guy clamed he has been shooting for 15 years and even worked at a local gun store a few years back. I was told that you shouldn't heat up the barrel that much or you could loose acuracy. Just woundering what some of you thought about properly breaking in a barrel?

and I own a 30-06 and after two mags it gets fairly hot. I was told to break it in, fire 2 shots let it cool clean it and so on for atleast the first box

50-55 rounds in 10 minutes on a .300wm. you wont see me doing that to a new gun let alone one broken, at least not my own. LOL
talk about accelerated throat erosion, shoot one give the bbl a chance to breath 10-15seconds, shoot the next, repeat til you get your group done 5-10 rounds let sit for a couple of minutes *smoke break for me* then repeat.

Cool. Did you happen to notice if the tupperware stock was starting to melt? That would have been neat to see.

I wonder how many rounds it would have taken for the barrel to actually get hot enough where it began to significantly affect the throat. Sounds like he is well on his way to replacing his barrel.

Gun shop commandos. Gotta love 'em.

It was funny to see, after about the first box he said he might try to sight it in LOL but it was raining and he didn't want to walk out in the rain to set up a target

Other than accelerated throat erosion I wouldn't worry about it. Think of all the milsurp that have been shot until the bbls are hot. Some still give good accuracy.

Next time I have a bbl that walks after a few shots I am going to shoot the s**t out of it, heating it up bad a few times. May relive the internal stresses.....:D

I call this type of person a "scientist". They tend to know it all, and you cannnot tell them otherwise. Best to stand back and enjoy the show. Sooner or later, they make a total boob of themselves, to the great enjoyment of those who watch.....enjoy the show...

Thats what I did......... and he did seem like a bit of a know it all

Interesting, to say the least. I was shooting next to a similar **shat a few years ago. He had a brand new custom rifle chambered 6.5-300 Weatherby mag though. I made a comment to him about how hard that rapid shooting with such a large case/small diameter bullet was on throats, and he just laughed at me. He said modern barrel steels resist erosion, and that he expected to get 5000 accurate rounds out of his expensive barrel. It actually took him less than 500 rounds to wash the throat in that one. I was at the gunsmiths, and noticed the rifle on the repair rack, so had to ask what it was there for. 'smith told me customer was complaining he couldn't group anymore. Then he showed me the throat with a borescope. No rifling for about 5" up the throat... 300 Win mag will stand up better than that hotshot, but it's still hard on them to shoot them "hot" Regards, Eagleye.

If thats what he wants to do, fill your boots man. I don't have enough time to worry about what other guys do with their guns. As long as he's doing it in a safe manner, I couldn't care less.

saw a guy at the range once doing the same thing but with a 30-06 getting ready for moose hunting i said nothing to him and just sat next to him collectiong the brass, for my handloads. :D

I never say anything to anyone about the way they are shooting unless they are being unsafe or they are my guest and I'm instructing them and of course I'm responsible for them. Lifes too short to get into p*ssing contests with "I know everything about every subject" people!!
