I just did my non-restricted firearms test and will be doing the restricted one in the next week or two. I cannot believe all of the regulations and fees. I am especially disheartened by the costs of joining a gun club in my area, but after the first year it is not so bad I guess.

My other fear is that handguns will be banned in my area and then what happens to my firearm? I would be pretty angry to have it taken away after this lengthy and costly process.

Anyhow, I look forward to getting started in the sport and learning from all the people on this forum.

I am pretty sure my first handgun will be a 9mm and after a lot of research I think i am choosing between a glock 17, beretta 92fs or possibly a SIG 226...any thoughts?

Also, any thoughts on the Ajax Rod and Gun Club versus the Marksman Club of Oshawa?

First of all, welcome to the club!! The shooting sports are an incredible amount of fun once you get your head around all the paperwork and regulations.

As far as the Lieberals bringing a ban in; vote Conservative! Tell your friends to vote Conservative! I can't predict the future, but if you don't buy a handgun, you'll never know what it is like to have one.

As far as your first handgun, 9mm will be fun (and I really like the G17). However, I will caution you - even 9mm is pricey to shoot. I would suggest you get a .22 as well; perhaps a conversion kit for whatever 9mm you buy. A .22 is cheap to shoot and fun.

Can't help you on club selection...

The punisher has it right...get a .22 too. I bought a nice little single shot revolver for 100$ on the EE. Keep your eyes open and you can get one on the cheap. Of course if money is no object then go nutz. Welcome to the sport. It's really unfortunate people have to worry about losing their private property to criminals as well a lawmakers. I think we are safe but we have to keep fighting for our rights. Ownership is part of it. I'm trying to pickup as many as I can :)

Depending on your budget and how much ammo you wanna shoot, it may be a good idea to get a CZ75/85 and their 22LR Kadet conversion kit.

22LR ammo is very cheap and you'll justify the kit in just 2000 rounds.
Whether you shoot 9mm or 22LR with that setup, you use the same frame and trigger; Kadet has adjustable rear sight too...

Welcome!

I'm with CeeZer on the CZ with conversion kit. That's going to be my first handgun (CZ75) - I'm saving up for it as we speak!

Starting with a .22 isn't just about cost, they're also better for learning technique when you first start (essentially no recoil). That said, I got bored with the .22s pretty quickly, which is why I'm buying a 9mm first! But to each their own. You won't know until you get out a try them yourself. And "practicing" is the best part :D :ar15:

Thanks for the responses everyone. I am on the same page as another poster here because I know I will get bored of a .22 so fast that I think it will be a waste of money for me. I cannot find a website that has the cost of 9mm vs .22 cal ammuniton though, does anyone know one? One reason I went 9mm over .45 was because of the ammunition costs. Of course the other reason is I have heard 9mm is much easier to control for a new shooter.

Apparently I don't need to worry too much yet anyhow because as I read through other threads it seems I am still at least two-three months from getting my rpal. Someone will have to explain to me the point of sending things back and forth by snail mail with the slowest acting company on the planet...the government!

As to the 22 well give you some info
My daughter is about 8 years old and she goes to the range with me now and then I usually use my 45 for the most part because I carry it in the bush for animal defen I have ATC so its a nice gun in case I run into a bear specially when I have my daughter with me on the quad

When we both go to the range she uses my 22 small print and she likes to shoot and has a blast

My wife just pased her non restrict she is looking forward to go shooting
I managed to recruit two new shooters as well

22 is not a waste of cash its kind of a nice target pistol

Have fun

Hey welcome, you're going to love this sport.
If cost is a real factor for you, and in the beginning you're going to find you're plunking down LOTS for things you never even thought of, consider a Norinco pistol to start with. They cost $350 brand new in any caliber, and you can get copies of the best designs out there: 1911, P226, CZ etc. These pistols are highly underrated for the recreational shooter, and it allows you to get your feet wet while actually shooting more because you spend the money you saved on the gun on ammo instead!
.22 is a great way to go in a rifle or handgun. You can buy bulk for almost nothing ie: 1000 rounds for around $170.
I would agree with what has been said already about the possible ban: buy now and hope to be grandfathered if it happens, because we're not going down without a fight if it happens. I know I'll be looking for a good lawyer and do everything I can to keep it from happening.
Tell all your friends that only the CPC party has the brains to understand that banning legally owned and operated guns doesn't hurt anyone that's actually causing the shooting problems we have currently.

Wow, you guys really want me to buy a .22! Cost is not a huge factor for me. I can't spend 10k but I anticipate starting a new activity such as this will cost a couple thousand dollars...and then god knows how much once I am hooked! I am pretty set on a 9mm...so would you vote for the sig 226, glock 17 or beretta 92fs?

It's not only about the cost. A .22 is good for developing pistol skills when you don't have the recoil of a centrefire pistol.

You should always have at least 1 .22 cal. handgun and 1 .22 cal rifle in your cabinet. .22 = cheap practice. If you can not hit what you are aiming at with a .22 then you will not hit it with a 9mm.

I have a Glock 17 and i love it! Easy to use and maintain, Part for cusomize it is widely available and cheap and you can have a .22lr conversion kit for this one too;)

I have to do 10 sessions with a club .22 supervised when I join the gun club in my area, I guess I can make up my mind after that. I know when you get the same advice from several people with more experience it is probably worth paying attention. Although, I still WILL get people's oppinions of those 3 9mm...somehow! ;)

beretta 92fs thats what im leaning towards for my first 9mm..there indestructable lol.. but your going to hafto get a lawn chair and come have a sit with me cause ontario is very fast at processing.... it took me over 4weeks to receive my PAL test aproval from the CFO... its been another 3weeks for my RPAL and i still havent got it back yet... and you wait another 28days plus once u send everything to the rcmp.. so taker easy and read some more forums lol

one option is to get a pistol that will do both, a cpo sig p226 9mm, with a .22lr conversion, its not cheap, but you have the best of both worlds.

redtory, here ya go:

approx cost of .22 is 3 cents per round.
approx cost of 9mm is 25 cents per round. That's eight times as much!

Buy by the case, you usually get a discount. Besides, it feels good to have 5000 rds of .22 and 500 of 9mm...

Try all the pistols if possible that you are considering buying--- at the very least try holding them to see how they fit your hand. If price is not a problem I would go with the Sig P226 first over the Beretta and the Glock. Not that there's anything wrong with the other two, the Sig just fits my grip better.
Nothing wrong with starting in 9mm, in fact, my first handgun was a 1911 in 45 ACP, and I still shoot it better than any other caliber. Oh yeah, you should try a 1911 if you ever get a chance too-- I like it better than the Sig even.
