After purchasing my VP9 a few months back I'm getting that urge to purchase another firearm, especially another HK.
The MR223 caught my attention mainly for it's unique look and Gas Piston design.

I'd probably end up selling my Colt IUR to fund the purchase of an MR223A3 14.5" if I decided to go this route but I can't help but look at it from a more realistic view.
If this rifle where to end up replacing my current AR15 how is it as an all around rifle?

I know there's no such thing as a firearm that can do it all. I just want a rifle that could be used for some carbine classes, possibly a bit of competition and then something I can take with me to the states to do some hunting or classes with (I'd have to temporarily pin/weld a flash hider on to get 16" OAL)

Just looking for MR223 owners and their thoughts/experiences on the rifle and what they use it for and how it's worked out for them or if they have any regrets?

feel free to try to talk me out of my plans...or talk me further into them?

It's the closest thing to the HK416. Fit & finish is bar none.

Only down side is weight (like most piston ARs) but you can always get a Gieselle rail to replace the quad rail.

RL1 is going to pickup his in a few days, he can give you a range report then!!!

While most if not all of these threads end up with " buy a Norinco and spend the rest of the money on ammo & training" I'll bite. I don't want to go through the "pros & cons" argument since, it can't be won on the internet. I own and have shot many HK's all excellent rifles & pistols. It's really about personal preference, and yes the "piston" system does offer something different than the DI, but that's another debate altogether. If you like the rifle and it's what you want? go for it, money well spent IMO. HK is coming out with an MR in 14.5" & 11" if your interested. Other than that, all the internet SME's are bound to weight in here, so good luck.

Those are some great looking guns, thanks for sharing the pictures guys!

Do you know if the 16.5" is still available to purchase new or would I have to keep my eyes out for a used one? I like the idea of getting over that 16" barrel length if I ever wanted to take it to the states for some fun and not have to worry about pinning anything on the end.

You can always email or post in North Sylva forum? for some "stocking" dealers, or try these guys they seem to have some good stock. Cheers

I really like mine for all of the obvious reasons. Fit & finish are superb, reliability and durability are outstanding. The only downsides are initial cost and weight. Not much you can do about the cost, but the weight can be partially addressed by a change of the handguard and/or a shorter barrel (unless you plan to take it State-side). Oddly enough, despite the increased weight of the piston system and quad-handguard, I find the recoil impulse of the MR223 to be much more noticeable than that of my DI ARs or even my other piston guns (eg. ACR, XCR, SIG MCX). Aside from the above, the MR223 handles and shoots just like any other AR. There's really not much more to it....

Finding a muzzle brake will be a challenge since it doesn't share the same treads as your ar15. Besides that, I really enjoy mine. The trigger is average and I wish it came with a mlok rail.

I have the MR556 version. Really like it, except for the fact that it's a bit front-heavy, compared to my other ARs. To deal with that, I've got a 10.4" barrel on order.

I have just the mr556a1 upper on a colt lower, no complaints apart from the stupid 'anti auto fire' features. The protrusion on the barrel is supposedly there to prevent the use of a FA bcg... it was a pain fitting the cmmg arc .22 in there because of it. Firing pin safety also prevents some hammers from working. You, obviously, won't see this if you have a complete rifle and do not put any custom parts into it.

That "notch" is there to thwart the use of the 416 BC, if your interested send it to Casey at TacOrd he's an HK armorer, and he can mill it off, that seems like what a lot of folks in the US do?

Had mine (16.5") taken down under the hand guards took about a pound or so off. Very accurate, I'm getting a bit better than my CC IUR for accuracy. Stays clean!!!! Very reliable. Fit and finish are better than any AR FOW that I've ever seen.
