P 14 question

Hi,quick one here, what does the red white red painted stripes on the stock on either side of the reciever mean? thanks.

First guess would be "Drill Purpose"?

White would denote "Drill Purpose", if it is a P-14 it is in .303 right? I've seen M-17's, .30-06's with a red stripe, that way the troops knew at a glance that the rifle was not a .303.

Which one is yours?

I thought it was an ID for telling the differance between 3006 and 303. Mine has red white red strips each 5/8" aprox wide.

Red and White on P-14 is drill purpose, Red only on P-17 is to denote caliber in 30-06.
