Hey everybody,

I got a P-14 eddystone with a sporter stock. but is has some cracks that keep opening up so I want to try to find a new (new to me) stock. Any idea where I might find a stock that would fit my rifle? what are the odds of finding a original P-14 stock?

Also, I want to get into hand loading ammo for it, so I am trying to get info about what bullet would work best with this type of rifle. Any tips? What grain was used in .303 ammo during WW1 and WW2?

Many thanks guys:dancingbanana:

I've got one that's split badly in a few places, whoever cut it down had a heavy hand with the sander as well and thinned it out way too much in critical areas. Unevenly to boot. I'm thinking of ordering a laminate sporter stock from Boyds for it. They do make reproduction unfitted full stocks for the P17. I'm not 100% sure whether it will fit the P14 or if there's any minor external differences between the two that would make it a PITA.

Be sure to try flat based bullets in your hand loads, .312 dia if you can find it. 174 gr. Earlier versions used a 215 gr round nose, Tradeex has some Woodleigh soft point bullets in this weight if you want to try them. Should be good for anything on this continent.

These very under rated fine rifles came with a very good metal to wood fit from the factory. The main cause of stocks splitting is caused by people shooting the rifles in the past with loose action screws, another cause is when the wood behind the action recoil lug becomes soft from oil contamination and then the action starts to set back into it and it puts too much stress on the stock at the action tang which then cracks.

This is a common problem with Mausers as well, but is easy to stop the crack and fix by using a solvent to remove the oil contimation in the wood in the action area and then slightly opening up the crack and then filling with glue or acruglass and bedding the recoil lug at the same time.

BTW, the full stock set they sell at Boyd's will fit on a P14 with some minor wood fitting for those that are handy but will not be correct for the rifle and will be easily spotted as a fake stock set when on the rifle. Numrich was selling original stocks, Marstar also had some but are now out, the original ones are out there but not as common as they once were.

When hand loading for the P14 (very strong, front locking, 3 locking lug action) you can safely get a lot better performance from the .303 then you can get from any Lee Enfield (not as strong 2 lug, rear locking action) and the cases last a lot longer as well (very little case stretching on these actions).

Since you live in Camrose, the large Calgary Gun Show should be coming up---usually Easter Week-end. Gun Shows are a source of parts, although it might take a bit of time before you find what you want.

Full wood stocks are getting scarce, but sporterized stocks are still available.

I just looked it up April 18 & 19. definitely got to go, even if I don't find what I am looking for, I sure will find something. I am trying to find some round nose bullets, but so far no luck, any good ideas as to where I could get some?

I looked all over North America for an original stock. Found one in the US. Sold before I could get my sh*t together.

I think it was Boyd that makes a P17 ful wood stock that others have told me will fit with a little work.

215gr roundnose at Tradeex. Check under their Woodleigh Bullets heading.
