Hi,

Just wondering if its safe to shoot .38 +p in a S&W model 10. Im after a .38 revolver and I like the model 10. I have several hundred rounds of .38 spl to shoot, half of which are +p. Just need to know if its safe to shoot that ammo in it.

Also, what does a Model 10 go for these days, approximately.

Thanks

Google search...

"As long as it's a 10-? (ie. Stamped 10-5 in the crane) +p's will be fine. Just a plain model 10 (No dash) I'd limit the use of +p's. If it's a pre-model number M&P avoid using any +p's"

Other people will be able to confirm.

... For what it's worth, the RCMP when the switch was made to +P ammunition, recalled, all but the very last of the Model 10's with a "C" Prefix in the Serial Number. And, of those remaining, they were to be used sparingly, with the +P, until they could be replaced. ..... David K

I had a model 10-5 for quite a few years and it fired thousands of +p 158 factory loads with no issues at all. Mine had a D prefix serial number.

Any postwar, "short action" K Frame can be safely used with +P ammunition. This would include any gun with a model number stamped on it, as well as some pre-Model 10s.

When I was getting started, I telephoned Sierra's tech line to ask whether my 4.6gr WW231 and 158gr LSWC .38 Special reloads would unduly wear a S&W Model 15. The tech, explaining that his own had digested tens of thousands of reloads that had been loaded to the +P+ equivalent, assured me that the Combat Masterpiece would be completely unaffected by my load.

The only thing that you have to worry about is (your) developing a flinch.;)

Thanks for your info guys! Im going to keep my eyes open for a Model 10 or Model 14 on the EE. To be honest, I dont think these +P loads are very hot anyway. 158 grain lead swc with 3 grains of bullseye.

Ive got a line on a Model 10 ( no dash). I hate to resurect old threads, but before I " pull the trigger" on this deal, I want to be sure I can shoot as much +P as I want in it. I bought commercial reloaded 158 SWC .38 spl and +P

The problem is some sellers are improperly advertising any K-frame .38 as a "Model 10" without researching exactly what it is. Smith & Wesson has used a number of names for this style of gun which has added to the confusion - M&P, Military & Police, Hand Ejector (generically applied to any early swing-out cylinder model), Victory model, Model of 1900, Model of 1904, Model of 1905, etc. All could be a K-frame .38 Special.

General rule is, if there is a genuine "MODEL 10" stamped on the frame inside where the cylinder crane recesses, it is good for +P ammunition. If it is not, it's basically the same style of gun but older and not acceptable for +P ammo.

Cote, 3.0 grains BE is not even a "regular" 38 spl load. Go to town with your "+P"s and a Model 10 will be saying "is that all you got, mister?"

I wish I would have know that before I bought em. I picked up a ton of this reloaded .38 ammo for really cheap. I hope its going to be somewhat accurate when I shoot it.

Accurate, yes they should be. Wimpy, yes too:D

I wonder what the regular 38 load is that you got?

Have fun! And yes...AK above said it right, you gotta make sure you verify that you really have a Model 10...I bought a "10" and it was actually a WWII "38 spl" erstwhile "38 S&W" K-frame known as Fourth Change....but it was very tight and an excellent shooter. Either way, your ammo (regular and +P) will be GTG for a pre-model number K frame/Model 10.

I think perhaps the .38 spl were loaded with 3 grains of bullseye and I cant recall what the +P ones were loaded with. I wish I had kept the data sheet that came with them. The seller claims that it is a no dash Model 10.
