P14 Caliber Change

any belted magnum or ultra mag cartridge will fit the bolt face without modification but the magazine well and follower need a little adjustment. I ahve done a .458 WM and a .300 Imperial or Canadian Magnum.

In fact the P14 can be rebarreled to almost anything but the wisest decision is to stay within the parameters of the original cartridge so anything based on the 303 Brit is an easy job, if you change to one of the rimless 06 based cases you would be better off with the P17 as a starter.

A US Model of 1917 with a Pattern 1914 bolt is a common conversion to .300 Win Mag. The magazine has trouble with some rounds, but overall it is a well known change up.

The issue for this receiver is to cut off the ears, but the steel is blasted hard! If you do cut the steel, carry the receiver ring's contours to the back end. This way, you will have the same shape and height for both ends of the scope.

I believe A Square still uses P-14 actions as the basis for their rifles, and they build some monsters. The RUM case offers many possibilities, as do the belted magnums, it just depends on the niche you want filled. I would not be inclined towards a rimmed case on a custom bolt gun, as it introduces the potential for feeding problems, and to a lesser extent so can a belt.

I would not be inclined to change the action to #### on opening. The #### on closing makes the action slicker in that you are not attempting to #### the action and withdraw the cartridge on the same movement.

Spin on the barrel of your choice, bed the action to a high quality stock, trim off some of the excess steel around the action, and you will have a fine rifle.

X 2 - I played with a 416 Rigby version, it was well built.

I have to disagree with you there, I prefer the #### on opening...but that is just my preferance.

People routinely take a p-14 action,magnum it and swap for a p-17 magazine assembly..............................Harold

The P-14 bolt face and extractor will fit a belted magnum whereas a M17 bolt face and extractor would have to be modified to fit.

So? It seems to me that opening a M17 bolt face; which is what was done on my alteration of a m1917 to 300 win mag; would be easier then getting a P14 bolt to headspace properly in an M1917!
