For some time, I have been trying to source correctly marked parts to rebuild a Remington made P14 Mark I and a "R" P14 Mk.I*. I have enough parts on hand if I ignore the markings. I have had an ad on CGN for a while. An acquaintance sent a rear sling swivel assembly - a good example of what I am playing with.

This is the Rear sling swivel base unit - it attaches to the stock with two blued slotted screws. As you can see, the "R" would be against the wood - I think "W" did similar - the "E" tends to be where you can see it with the rifle assembled. So have to remove this base unit, to see who made it - this one is "R". So far, so good, as far as looking for a P14 part.

Unfortunately for me, while brushing off some crap, this American Eagle stamp appeared - so this part is NOT for a P14 - it was made for a m1917 at some time - by "R".

It gets a bit "worse" - I was not convinced by examination that the end of that cross screw had been "riveted" or belled out. The slot in the screw head looked like someone had a screw driver in there. So I took a chance and set the assembly in my woodworker vice, then selected a snug fitting parallel ground bit and tried to turn it out - to my surprise, it turned - when I removed it, it has those funky 33 threads per inch like it should have. I then removed the sling loop - some more cleaning and this appeared on the sling loop eye:

Hopefully you can see the "R" on the side of the eye - apparently "W" also put their mark there as well - "E" is out on the loop where you can see it when the thing is assembled. So, again, have to remove the thing to see who made it - is the same item as used on the band for the front sling loop - on a P14, M1917 and SMLE (Lee Enfield No. 1) the sling loops are "off set" - so the sling will hang to right of centre of the rifle. I could not find an Eagle head on this part - so it "could be" for a P14, or it "could be" for a M1917 (that got missed for stamping). The "R" would signify that it can NOT be for an SMLE - different makers/contractors entirely, although the part likely looks, fits and functions perfectly - just wrong stamp on it.

I thought there might be some interested to see how these things were done - more than 100 years ago.
