P14 or P17 to .458

I know a P14 that has ben converted to 45-70. Everything works the way it is supposed to. I asked the owner, whom I know well and he has been a life long shooter, how he liked it, here was his answer. "The damn thing kicks like a big mule and I can't begin to load it to near it's capabilities."

My favorite P-14 is in 404 Jeffery and is a very comfortable rifle to shoot with any bullet from 300 gr. on up to 450 gr.
However my brother built two of his M-17s in 505 Gibbs and 510 Wells.
I guarantee they will get your attention when you squeeze the trigger....

The M98 would be a better choice as the Enfield is bigger than needed and there would be more aftermarket goodies for the Mauser.

That was the whole point behind the 7mm/300/338/458 mags as they were short enough for a 30/06 length action.

Me too. P-17 suits a full length H&H case (2.85") or the big Rigby case.

So if you wanted to, you could build a .458 Lott on a P-'14 action. You wouldn't need to do anything to the bolt, as the extractor and bolt-face are already good for the big base of the Magnum-type cases descended from the Holland Super Thirty.

It would want the magazine box changed and the feed lips in the receiver opened out.

I suppose you could run .458 Winchester in a Lott if you really wanted to, but easier would be to have the straight Lott and then download to .458 performance. You would end up with greatly lowered pressures, which will make extraction MUCH easier in hot weather...... which is the REASON that all those huge old British cartridges ran about 37,000 pounds pressure. THEY extracted easily in hot African weather while the guys with the German-made Mausers were ripping the heads off their brass because their higher-pressure cases were sticking in the chambers.

Sure be one helluvva rifle, I'll say that much.

I have a p14 in 458 and I did the work myself. I bought a lilja barrel and a manson reamer and gauge. I like the 350's way better than the 510's that I have loaded for it because they hurt me. I ground the mule ears off and drilled and tapped and installed a weaver k4 and it has a dayton trayster trigger and lock kit in it. It shoots really well. I shot a mule deer with it a couple of years ago and it made a perfect 458 hole right through it and never damaged an ounce of meat.

been there, done that, loved it and wish that I still had it .......!:(

I have a P14 in 458. Also have one that was a 458 and is now a 450 Ackley, which is a better cartridge IMHO (better then the Lott too, but that's another tale). They aren't difficult to build, feeding can sometimes be a bother, but with patience that will work out as well. Sometimes you need a new mag follower, makes feeding easier, but I've seen it done with a reshaped factory follower as well. Just don't expect it to be a bolt on mod, because it's not. - dan
