Bought my first milsurp, a somewhat butchered P14. It has a "W" at the beginning of the serial #, so I assume that means Winchester? The front sight and rear sight "ears" are still there. Is the front sight supposed to be a flat top post? The rear sight is butchered but I have found a supplier on the EE. Are they all the same or did they differ with the various manufacturers who made P14s? What is supposed to be in the butt plate trap? Is there supposed to be brass pin in the stock behind the magazine? Are stripper clips available anywhere? Anybody have a stock set for sale  ?? I bought this to take part in my club's milsurp matches, it's not great but it was affordable. I have to say that I am impressed by the quality of the machining, quite a surprise on a wartime rifle.
Thanks!
Kevin

Yes, you have a Winchester P14. The front sight blade for all intents and purposes is identical to the #4 Mk1 Lee Enfield sight blade. The P14 rear sights are all the same between the 3 manufacturers, they are however, different from the M1917 sight. The difference, is that P14 sight is graduated to 1650 yds, vs. the M1917's sight which maxes out at 1600. Originally an oil bottle (Lee enfield Style) and a pull through was fitted into the butt trap. The brass pin is a factory item meant to prevent cracking in that area. Charger clips are available, the last ones I saw for sale were at Milarm In Edmonton. Not sure of the price.

Thanks for the info folks! I was not sure if the brass rod was factory or bubba because I can see a portion of, which is threaded like a wood screw, in the action inletting. It seems strange to have a post front sight with an aperture rear. Usually an aperture is paired with a bead front front. What hold were infantry men taught, 6 oclock?

The front sight is a blade, the dovetail slides into the sight block attached to the barrel.

P14 stocks are hard to find in VG condition. I do import 4-5 per year from the USA but the dollar is too weak now I bought this to take part in my club's milsurp matches, it's not great but it was affordable. If the barrel is good, should make a good shooter I have to say that I am impressed by the quality of the machining, quite a surprise on a wartime rifle. There are underated rifles IMO.
Thanks!

I found a pdf of the armourers assembly manual on line. Wasn't able to find an enlisted man's manual on the use of this rifle. In Frank DeHause' (sp?) book on bolt rifles he said that the sight was good for 300 yards and the ladder sight was for ranges longer than that, up to 1650, as Jakester said. So how were they taught to compensate for ranges between 0 and 300 ??
