P14 Serial Numbers

Referencing Stratton - all P14's made in the states were built between 1916 and 1917. (Apparently Vickers made some small number in 1915)

I seem to recall mine has the year of manufacture stamped somewhere but you have to take the action out of the stock to see it.

It's been a while since I have done that and will likely be a while yet before I do again.

I'm up for anything here. I do know my P14 was made sometime in 1917 according to the barrel date but I would love to know roughly when too.

I do know that Winchester was capable of turning out close to 1000 a day.

S/n W-305 is dated 1915. It is one of the pre-production rifles sent to England for evaluation.

S/n W-201401 is dated 1917.

According to the little pocket reference that George Madis put out (available from the Winchester Museum at Cody), Winchester serials "passed 245,000".

I believe that Remington turned out a few less than Winchester. The BIG producer was Remington-Eddystone, of course. They could turn out 4,000 a day if they had to, plus spares as necessary. They actually did this over an extended period while building the US M-1917, which was essentially the same rifle. Hatcher gives production for the 1917 month-by-month and separated by factory: nice chart.

Hope this helps.

Mine is an ERA serial number range 51 ###. It seem like the best I can say is it was made during World War 1. The strange this is that is does not have all the markings that my Remington P14 has.

I have a 4 digit ERA....
