I want to rebarrel aP14 to a 338 win mag, I would need a barrel and a follower and an action, which P14 action would be good for this, I have one that is stamped "ERA", rifle has already been seen by bubba

3 names ...

Eddystone actions are not the best (they are too hard, almost brittle) ...those marked Winchester and Remington are the best.

If you need a barrel and an action why would you choose a P14?

There is no way you can build up an acceptable sporting rifle on any military receiver for less than you can buy a factory built sporter that is already chambered in the cartridge you mention.

Do a bit of looking around. The internet is your friend. So are gun shows. A Remington or Winchester in 338WM can be had for less than $600.

Even if you got that action as a freebie, it would cost $400 for a barrel blank, minimum of $150 for a Boyd's stock, $200 to get a gunsmith to chamber, fit and headspace the barrel properly. Then if you decide you need a different action, you might get lucky and find just what you're looking for with all of the trimming done for $100+ Then, there is the cost of a blue job, add another $150.

A new in the box Savage can be had in the $750 range, stainless and in a walnut stock. P&D Enterprises. IMHO Savage rifles are fugly but do they ever shoot well. It's all built, ready to go and on a very decent platform, for what it will cost you to get the milsurp up and running and it will be backed up by a factory warranty as well.

I'm almost done a winchester p-17 in 458 win mag. I have countless hours in it and some day with a million hours I might have something that looks like an fine african custom. Just buy one that is already a 338 and be done with it. I have a pile of money into this one and its just an old p-17.

If you are going to build it. Make it for the challange of doing it yourself. You will never het what you put into it out of it in the end. "Custom" guns are worth peanuts at gunstores because it is a gun suited just to you and will take a long time to sell to someone else just like you. As others have said it will be well over the 1k mark for allthe parts and labour, and if you decide to sell it. It will likely go on the shelf for a little higher than a sporterized p14.

There's a .338 on an Enfield action kicking around somewhere on the EE. Too much money I think, but still cheaper than rebarreling from scratch. Once you start having to pay a gunsmith, you'll never get that money back out of it if you decide to sell it. If I were going to drop that kind of coin on a custom rifle, I'd start with a Mauser 98 action.

P.S. do a search on the sporting arms EE for BSA and the .338 will come right up.

P14 to 338 Win Mag. No problem just lots of work. You need a barrel fitted and chambered. Need mag box and feed rails machined and fine tuned. If you have the resources these are very strong actions. Seen and personally owned 308 Norma Mag, 375 H&H, 404 Jefferies. Conversions in the 60's very popular in 300 Win Mag, 458 win and 505 Gibbs. If you can find a converted P14 yours miles ahead finanically however you'll miss out on all the find. Ron
