Well ever time I open my gun safe I have an old P14 action staring at me. The action was bought for me for my bday about 6 years ago. The action hast been sporterized and the bolt has been refaced to accept bigger cal if I remember right the guy the action was bought from was going to build a 375 h&h well after some thought I think it time to do something with this action I have checked with a few gun smiths and they say they can build me a cal of my choice my problem is not sure what I want.
I already own a 300 wsm 270 win 30-30 303 and 6.5x55

Any ideas I was thinking 338 win but I am open to ideas

The P14 bolt should accept any magnum bolt face as it is. It was the P17 that needed to be opened up from the std. .473 (30-06) to accept anything larger.

Go with the 375 HH for fun. The action will surely handle it. Or, if you want to squeeze some more horsepower out the HH case, go with the 375 wby, and fireform HH brass!

Has anyone completed a build on a P14 on an Ackley cartridge? Will the sharp shoulders feed ok, or does it take a bit more machining inside the bottom of the receiver? I was going to use the P17 bottom as a template, and take that extra material out of the P14.

I'm building a 338-06, seems to be a interesting cartridge. There is also the 338-08 which would be different.Actually I think there is a barrel for sale in the EE. Good Luck

I had mine rebarreled and chambered for 7mm Remington Magnum. This was the best firearms decision I ever made. The P14 action could have been purpose made for this round, and if you compare it with the .276 Enfield you will see there is nothing closer. Recoil is very mild, feed is perfect,it is sub minute of angle, and shoots as flat as they come. Ammo and loading components can be had almost everywhere.

Did you have to do anything to make it feed properly?

Looking at the high price of bullets right now, I'm thinking of something like a 375 or 458 caliber and casting bullets. The big bullets seem less finnicky to cast and I believe both magnum cartridges in those calibers work well with reduced loads. Of course your not giving up the option of full house hunting loads.

I put 458 Winchester on mine, 26" Douglus shoots quite well. Weights 9lbs bare. I use a 1.5-4.5 power scope on it. Its not 100% finished still needs checkering and some work in the magizine well.

I am making a .405 Winchester. :D
Had to remove some metal under the receiver where the ammo comes up. Using a 1917 box.

That's what I thought needed to be done. If you compare the underbelly of the P14 and 17 receivers, you will really notice a difference of material present where the front of the bullets feed up from. Of course, the P14 (.303) shorter bullet length, there is a lot extra there that I'm assuming will need to milled out. The P17 mag box is a good idea, and of course there is the Numrich aftermarket one that works great.

Another vote for cartridge suggestion would be the 308 Norma. That's next on my list. Presently, I have 2 projects on the go: a 280 AI, and a 375 weatherby.
I'll post some results when they get finished up, I'm just a little slow.

My wife bought a BSA P14 at a gun auction 10 years ago for $ 2.00.
The rifle was in really nice condition..303 Brit with a good bore, but for some strange reason nobody was bidding . Three years ago I gave it to my brother ( a custom gun builder ) and said..." can you build me a 404 Jeffery "'
He finished it and sent it to me a couple months ago when I turned 61.
It is by far the nicest of the toys in the gun safe.
It groups 3/4" with 400, 350 , or 300 gr. Hawk bullets and at 11lbs.is a dream to shoot. Once I figure out how to post pics, I'll do so.

Here's my P-14 based 338, with a gaillard tube:

Anyone know how to convert a P14 from ####-on-close to ####-on-open (to take advantage of the additional leverage of the camming mechanism, and to smooth bolt operation)?

Dayton Traister has a 'speedlock' kit that I used on a P14. It replaces that horribly long lock time with a new spring, and I think it comes with a aftermarket trigger assembly too. It is very nice and works extremely well. It is almost a necessary upgrade on the P17/P14 action, and the service is great too.

That's awesome! Price is good, it includes an upgrade trigger and some other vital tune-up knick-knacks.

Where to source in Canda?
