P14 What To Build

Hi guys,
I know nada about the action on the P-14.
For those that have rebarreled, what action is the barrel and thread bsed on and/or the same as? Are there take-off barrels that fit or is it unique to itself to require a new barrel be threaded?

The same basic question goes for a replacemnt stock.

I am looking at a good condition action for a project to rebarrel/rechamber but don't even know where to start.

Thanks and Cheers

You need to read up on the p14/m1917 actions. They were all made by Winchester in one plant and by Remmington in two plants. The great majority were made between 1916 and 1919. A few were made or assembled by Remmingtion in the twenties and thirties.

You will need a gunsmith to remove the old barrel and install a new one. You can buy stocks and install them youself if you have some knowledge and experence. Bedding will be required for a good fit after the woodwork is done.!

Good luck.

Gibbsy, Why should I read when I can just ask you guys :p
I know the process of profiling, threading, chambering, headspace etc as well as restocking and bedding. I was just wondering if threads/size were consistent with anything else out there today.

Dan pretty much answered it for me.

thanks guys.

The P14/M17 utilize square threads, or sometimes called Acme threads. You will need some practice to cut those, or get someone else. The barrel will also need a bit more work to accomadate the coned breach.

I say reading up because I usually learn more that way. In any case I enjoy it!

Sounds like you are pretty much good to go then.

BTW there is a trick to getting the old barrels off. I belive that they were put on by two hefty guys with a four foot wrench! So you have to do a relicving cut on the old barrel so that the receiver is not cracked!

Gibbs,
I would read too if I had the time but this is not a good time :) Usually with a new topic my OCD kicks in and I learn everything I can about it....in this case I don't/won't have time to learn about them for the forseeable future so I am just gleaning from you folks that have actually read about it and learned.

I plan to get a gunsmith to do all the work once I get to it, I was hoping there may have been a shortcut or two I could have used wrt barrels I have available. Now just to figure a calibre as per this original post ;)

Cheers
