Looking for a 22 plinker..,

1) first off whats the diff between 87/89?
2) how does the walther compete to the Berettas?
3) Are the berettas a bear to holster if not on the hip? ( this question is more a "dream question" for when I get a wilderness ATC - I fear rabid squirrels , its hard to sleep at night )

I'm not familar with the Beretta 87 but I own a Beretta 87T (target). The 87T is the successor to the 89 and almost identical to the 89 other than the plastic grips and the optics rail. I guess it's supposed to have a more modern, 'tactical' look to it. I don't own a P22 but I've shot one and they are very different compared to the Beretta. The P22 is a tupperware gun and the Beretta is alloy framed with a steel slide. The Beretta 87T beats the Walther P22 in the accuracy department and, IMO, is a better gun but it is also almost twice the price. I find the P22 grips too small for me and I don't like the mag release being in the trigger guard. I can't give an answer about holstering either of them. For me, if these were the only two choices I have then I'd go with the Beretta but if you are open to suggestions, I'd check out the Hammerli X-esse, Ruger 22/45 or MarkIII and the Browning Buckmarks and forget about the P22. Your money, your choice. Take my comments for what they are worth, absolutely nothing! ;)

Ruger MKIII

I tried a few 22's and found this one to be the best for me in Accuracy, handling, and price. Got the top of the line target stainless for aprox $500. The cheap one is about $250 and that is all new from the box. If you can find the MKII it is also a great gun. I agree that the P22 is like a Tupperware gun and a small grip. Another nice one is the High Standard but they don’t make them any more so you have to get a used one.
Just my two cents

thx for your input, I decided to try/shop for the Beretta, it has a fairly bold look and can probably fire 200,000 rounds without a problem -thing looks like a tank. Accuracy is a real plus too.

Since a full size p99 just fits my hand, that P22 would probably be too small...

question about the action... is the 87T/89 a single auto after racking the slide? or a doubleaction pull every trigger pull like the P22?

(My current Walther P99 is a DA/SA - double on the first or from any point de-cocked)

I've had a Beretta 89 since about '92. It's single action. With a very light and crisp adjustable trigger break. The mag only holds 8 rounds as opposed to the 87's 10 rounds, which is my only complaint. It's very accurate and reliable. I love mine.

Pretty sure I saw one for sale here on CGN a week or two ago.

The walnut grips are semi-anatomical. So if you're a lefty, you're looking at about $300 to buy a left handed set. Assuming beretta still makes them.
