Thought I saw somewhere that Sig made a .357/.40 conversion kit for the P226. Can anyone verify this? I have a 9mm version but would like to get something with a little more poop behind it...

Can I just buy a .40 barrel and mags for my 9mm, plug them in and off I go? I would certainly think, at the very least, a guy would have to track down a stronger recoil spring as well.

Love my 226 and would love to get it in .40 but just can't justify another $1200 for a whole new gun. Can't remember where I saw something about convertible 226s...maybe it was in that wet dream I had last night...

1) The P226 frame for the 9mm and 40s&W are one and the same.

2) The difference is the slide(with everything in it) and mags

Essentially, you can get a replacement slide assembly and shoot multiple calibers using the same frame and therefore one single pistol. This is beneficial if there was a limiting quota for numbers of pistols to own. The cost of getting the slide is prohibitive though.

If you paid $1200 for a P226, then you'll be sad to here that Questar had new P226s for under $900.

Some replacement barrel makers have a 'drop-in' 9mm barrel that goes into the 40s&W slide(which is the same as 357SIG-a factory drop in conversion), however I don't have experience with a so called 'drop-in' 9mm barrel and have doubts of how well that works given spring, extraction, etc issues.

You can go from .40 to .357 Sig or the other way and still use the same slide, locking insert and even the same mags. You cannot go from 9mm to .40 etc. and even going from .40 to 9mm is problematic due to differences in the slide. I understand that there are kits (9mm conversion barrels) availiable in the States but they seem to require quite a bit of "fitting" and are not necessarily "drop in" parts.
You should look at this as a perfect opportunity to buy another Sig. You know that you want to!!!

Winz.... Don't forget that there is a different locking insert for the 9mm and the.40/.357 so the frame or some of it's components are not exactly the same.
