I have a 1943? CYQ P38 that I bought years ago that always had a problem and now I'd like to get to the bottom of it. With the hammer forward the safety functions as it should. With live rounds, dummy rounds, or no mag/no rounds if i rack the slide like one normally would I can't apply the safety, the lever moves 30-40* and then stops like its up against a wall, if you slowly drop the hammer, then reset the hammer you can then apply the safety (you feel firm resistance at that 30-40* and then it applies while de-cocking the hammer.

Has anyone seen this problem before? Googling hasn't turned much up.

Thanks!

The safety internal cylindrical part is very fragile, when the safety is turned to 'safe' with a cocked hammer, it will drop the hammer and at the same time blocks the firing pin, but the firing pin is still being hit by the hammer, if this is done too many times the safety will slowly chip away and cause issues.
It's best to lower the hammer slowly while putting on the safety in order to avoid this damage.

So, time to detail strip the slide to confirm the damage is in the safety.

Btw, CYQ code stood for Spreewerke, the lowest quality of the P38's
