I've bought a few pre-fit Decelerator pads in the past which fit acceptibly.

The one I recently got for my 870 is a terrible fit, so I'll be forced to grind it down.

I've heard that it should be frozen first to harden the rubber, and can be ground with a belt sander.

What grit of paper is recommended for this? Also, would a random orbit sander work? I have one of those as well, and it removes material less aggressivly than a belt sander...

No need to freeze ! Belt sander will work fine 100 grit down to 60 grit. Depends on how aggressive you want to be dressing the pad down.

Be aware there is a steel plate inside a Decelerator pad, its just over an 1/8 inside the rubber, so don't go grinding too deep. And I agree the prefit pads don't fit as well as a prefit pad should :mrgreen:

One way is to make a template of the butt and copy it onto a piece of sheetmetal or thin wood and form the sheet metal or wood plate to perfectly match the stock.

Two way tape the plate to the pad and it will prevent you from sanding off too much material.

I found I was able to use the existing screw holes as well due to the pad being largely oversized.

Pre-fit pads are becomming a very bad joke. Grad a grind-to-fit and go see your local smith, it's usually money well spent. I've found that metal plate twice, both times it was out of alignment of where it should have lined up. Have since switched to limbsavers. Much better pads!
