Hi i have a shotgun butt stock i need to put a new pad on
The small pad is too narrow to fit and the medium is long
I am concerned about the steel insert in the medium pad
Is the faint line on the underside of the pad
a outline of the steel insert??

If you go online to Pachmayr site they will give the minimum dimensions you can grind the pad to. There is a fair bit of pad before the steel insert so unless you have a very weird stock the smallest pad that will completely cover the butt will be the right one.

After over 50 years of installing pads I ended up with a box of about 30 Decelerator pads ground into the steel (cost about $1500 + wasted time) ... It happens occasionally. That faint indicating line is not exact.

Other than the look does it actually matter or does it become useless due to the fact the steel heats up while grinding and the actual pad is soft making even material removal impossible

I have done it once. I touched up the boo-boo with black RTV silicone. Fair to poor results. Tried brush-on electrical tape. Marginally better.
Kick-eez pads don't have a steel skeleton.

Seems to me Corlanes used to sell Decelerators without the steel insert. I bought a couple way back when. Still have one.

I have installed virtually every pad that is out on the market. They all work, but they don't install the same. So now after almost 27 yrs of installing recoil pads I use and supply one type of recoil pad, Kickezz Recoil Pads. There is no easier recoil pad on the market to install on a shotgun or rifle.
I've used hundreds of these pads over the years and they work great. In my opinion it's the best recoil pad by far.

^^^^^^^ this right here, IMHO kickeez is the easiest pad to install and one of the best pads on the market

I just finished installing a kickeez for the first time. Very nice to grind. Finished up beautifully.
My only gripe is the goofy looking molded rear surface. Too shiny.
