For those who hunt without an ATV or horse and where a truck can't go, what sort of pack do you use? Internal or external frame? Any specific brands you would recommend or advise avoiding? I'm looking for something specifically for hauling quartered game, not so much for hauling gear, though if its good for that also, so much the better.

1500 feet of rope and a few snatch blocks. Have not had to use more than 1000 feet so far. Usually less than 300 feet.

why would you shoot something where you can't get a truck to?

Because during moose season in Ontario, after the first couple of days most of the moose are as far from where a vehicle can go as they can get. I don't think the game cart would work out either as the ground is often too soft and it would sink. This moose season I was often over a Km from the truck as the crow flies, so the rope and snatch block isn't really what I was looking for either (I did have them along though). Some sort of frame pack is what I need, just looking for recommendations.

Make a moose sled, take a 45 gall plastic drum, non toxic if possible, cut down the side, roll out and place a cinder block on either end, use a torch to soften the plastic, once thats done get two pieces of flat bar steel and sandwich one lip of the now flat sheet, than drill a hole, put on a heavy carabeaner (sp) on that and a good rope, you can walk this thing anywhere, slides over rocks disperses water!! great rig.
this one here was still in the works but you can see we put loops on the sides to tie off a light rope when towing a quarter of moose at a time. All that was left was too attach the flat bar.

if you dont have a quad, then what you need to do is go directly to the beer store, purchase a case of beer, or two if the moose is a long way in the bush. then go visit your buddy that has a quad and present the beer to him and ask if he can come and haul your moose out for you!
oh and bring a chainsaw so you can cut a trail

For packing heavy loads an external is usually the best.

u young fellows watch the old timers how to hunt moose.
any body can walk a mile in the bush and shoot a moose.
the old timer calls the moose to a road and then shoots it.

The upper end external frame packs are made by Kifaru and Eberlestock. Mystery ranch also makes great quality gear.

Ryan robert, really like your moose sled...looks like it would work better than a fiberglass trappers sleigh ...especially when there is no snow on the ground.
Is the curled up front a separate piece tacked on?
Looks, to me, like the rolled out plastic is bigger than a split up barrel.
I need to make one .

I will be 65 on my next b'day, and try to not shoot anything very far from my canoe or truck, however...............
always take either my old Camp Trails or Kelty external frame pack with me. It's not as easy as it used to be, but still works. :D

Next one we get waaaay back we plan to eat right there.:p
We have dropped moose in places I am sure no human has ever been. With a few guys, an ATV, a boat and or a boat trailer we get them all out in one peice. We have also used a sled like robert ryan's (only a purchased one called an elk sled) it worked pretty slick.
