Paint a beat up svt-40 stock.

Got a refurb svt with really nice metal and bore, but the stock is beat to hell. Arsenal repairs all over and I have a crack to repair.

I was considering stripping it down filling the dents and painting it, but a solid paint looks so... bubba. (wishing i held on to that stock i parted out on my last one)

Anybody have any luck painting over wood and repairs with something that still shows some of that wood flavor? If so, got any pictures?

When i refinished my mosin nagants, I used oil for mine.

Did one in Linseed Oil

The other in Pine Tar cut with Terpantine

Both are historically accurate finishes as well.

Step 1: Strip it and get all the oil out. Easier said than done, but when you think you have all the oil out, keep at it. This is essential to properly fixing cracks and staining the stock.

Step 2: Repair cracks and treat the flaws any way you like. Some dents can be steamed out. Some gouges can be filled or showcased. I'll explain in a sec...

Step 3: Stain the stock as you wish

Step 4: Finish it with oil. I prefer polymerized tung oil for these "bubba" creations.


Before: a poorly repaired SKS with an upper handguard that was a different colour. All those dark red areas are covering gouges.

After I "showcased" the gouges by sanding the edges smooth and partially filling them with a black-stained filler. Then different colours of stain to give the stock the look of hard use and age. Then multiple coats of tinted polymerized tung oil followed by clear polymerized tung oil.

looks good! i think a darker oil is the way to go with a project like that for sure.

Marstar actually stepped up and is exchanging my beat up one for a better one. I might be getting a used m44 that needs some stock love tho, likely give it that nice polish blonde treatment.
