Quick question.

I'm painting my R700.

It has a stainless bolt

Can I paint the main tube and just cover the bolt head or would that affect any tolerances in the mechanism??

Also I would also want to sand it a bit to rough it up, that also ok to do?

I had a norc m14s with a baked on duracoat finish. the bolt stood up considerably well with very minor wear at the contact points. the lug bearing and bolt face was masked off to prevent painting them. That bake on duracoat is pretty damn good stuff

Sounds good guys. I'm using duracoat, pretty much the same as armacoat.

I'll give the bolt a paint then, I just wasn't sure at the time and didn't want to risk anything.

I'll cover the lugs up and give the remaining bolt part a paint. But I'll have to sand it first to allow for better paint contact.

I would simply give it a very light buff with a dremel wire wheel or not even that.
the last one i did i thouroughly degreased, then used the Duracoat bake on kit that i bought. It cam with a base layer/adhesion promoter so no sanding or buffing was used. The finish lasted over 300 rounds while i owned it and has seen much more with it's new owner. Saw the rifle the other weekend and it looked the same as it did when i sold it. ;)
I'm going to be doing up my M14 DMR rifle into a Urban Stealth camo pattern and will be using duracoat for the entire stock and rifle action, magazines, bipod and optics included. will be some time from now .... but I'll post pics for sure when it's done.

Not a bad idea, I have a dremel with the necessary head. I'll see what works best. Duracoat recomments sanding with 600 grit so I'll see how that looks as well.

I have used duracoat products extensively. A fantastic product, adding less than one thou per application. I haven't painted any accurised rifle bolts, but AR's, enfields & pistol slides. i have applied three coats with an airbrush, baked for 2 hours & fired. This product does not cause any malfunctions at all. It is easy to apply, can ber baked in a small oven & gets harder as it ages. They also do a couple of heatproof products if anyone is considering painting a barrel that is going to be "well used".
