Painting a crappy wood stock

So I hate this one rifle and was thinking of turning it into an ugly duckling. Going to pull the action and Cerama-cote it all, then bed the action and paint the stock. The wood is dry and the checking is pressed-in crap. I was thinking of a striking color, maybe Scott Shop Towel blue or something. Table saw to adjust LOP and then stick a Limbsaver on it. Probably just hockey tape over the checkering, better grip. Then a receiver sight.

What's worked as far as painting a finished wood stock? Probably will either need to strip the finish chemically or sand the stock down so paint will adhere properly. I just want something that will dry decently, not flake off too easily, and not stink up my gun safe. Tried rustoleum on plastic and it still smells after months of curing.

Whatever product you use, you'll get better adhesion if you scuff up the surface.

I like Krylon, but the smell takes a long time to disappear. For cheap and cheerful though, I haven't come across anything better.
