I have a quick question I have a set of old 870 Police Wood that has seen better days. I am going to try and strip it and hopefully raise some of the grain on the deep scratches. My question is if it does not clean up nice I would like to use the stocks as the lenght of pull is nice and short so can I paint or coat the stock with bedliner or stone effect paints and does the adhear to wood ? Does anyone have any other suggestions on what I can use or can post a pictures of there wood stocks that have been painted or coated.

I recently picked up a nice walnut stock and forend set for an 870 for $30.00 locally off Kijiji. I then stripped it three times with varnish/paint remover. Right now it is hanging with ten coats of Tru-oil having been applied.
Looking real good right now.
Maybe give that a try.

If you end up painting..... The choices are limitless.

My 870 Wingmaster. A home water-dip. I was going for something different.

I hope refinishing it will help cure the problem but I think some of the scratches might be to deep which is why I was thinking the bed liner might do the trick.

Scratches and gouges can be filled. It was a long time ago so I don't remember exact procedures, but I did some repairs by making a "paste / filler" of sorts using sawdust and glue from a similar wood. Mix it together and apply. You can even stain it to match the tint of certain wood. I'm trying hard to remember what project I did this with and whether the grain was important to the end product. I'm thinking the grain was important or I wouldn't have bothered doing all that. Would have just used regular filler.

I can remember my failures better than succeses, so I'm guessing this method worked.
Should be lots of tricks out there to try.

Try textured spray paint, I used tremclad textured black on a beaten stock and it hides a bunch of minor damage while still giving a good grip surface.
