PAL app then adding the resticted before its complete?

Question for a friend.
He completed his safety course today with an excellent score and has been waiting to get his PAL and doesn't really want to set it back longer, same with most of us, anyhow, his first chance to get the restricted course done is in January. My opinion is rather than challenge the course and risk failing, or missing out on information he can gain during the course is to wait.
Now the real question, if he starts his paperwork now and sends in for his PAL can he amend the application to include the restricted once the course is complete?
We're in Alberta if that makes any difference.

I'm thinking this is a decent plan, mailing in the application takes time, then its added to it into the RCMP system etc so I think he's got time to do this, I'm just not sure if it can be done.

To be sure I would have hike call the 1-800 number but as I understand it if he applies for his pal only, once it is in the system it is treated as such. Submitting a rpal afterwards is treated as a new application in which he has to send in new photo ect. When submitting an app the test results need to be submitted however they can be sent in separate from the app form. This will only cause a delay in processing and it will not progress until they have the results. If he applies now for a pal and then applies for his rpal in January he will have to wait the 28 days again, however his fee will only be $40 as opposed to $80. (you get a 50% discount if you apply for your rpal within 3 years of you pal).
 
Mail in your pal now and get the pal license after you have the rpal course done mail in a new app for restricted. Hopefully you will have your pal early and enjoying long guns before you mail in your rpal. They will just issue a new pal/rpal once the new rpal app has completed processing. Considered an upgrade. Will take longer for the rpal to process so might as well have fun with the long guns in mean time. You will have to do a completely new app and pics but better than waiting that much longer. rpal will have all of your references called and pal wont 99.9% of time saving on issue time for the pal.
 
He can check off NR+R and send his application in now and then send the test results when he gets them. This way both are done at the same time. By the time he gets his PAL he'd be done the course and have to do the paperwork all over again anyway.
 
Yes I just did this myself so I am 100% sure. Send in the Pal so they start the 28 days but have him pay the $80 for both Licenses (Once the 28 days pass they will send a notice in the mail that says they required his RPal Exam score.) So the 28 Days plus the time for the letter to get to him asking for more info he would be very close to taking the course. Call the 1-800 number and tell them the date of your RPal Course, once you get the results back from CFO you can fax it direct and save the time it takes to mail it back in. Wait 2 days and call to confirm they have the fax or you will see the status updated online to know they got it. The letter they send out says you have like 6 months to get them the RPal exam score and I didn't have to do a second form or pictures. It was 3 months between my Pal and RPal. No Issues.
 
Hmmm at least he has some options.
I'll have to talk to him and see what he's thinking for the best way to proceed. In different areas I'd say his best are, PAL for now & delay the R app as long as he feels because he will have the PAL in the mean time, RPAL app with the R results to follow (possibly the best). I can't see him waiting until January to start the process but both of these options get the ball rolling and don't take time (or much time) from him getting started.

Personally, I don't see the point in rushing the restricted if you know you want it in the next year or less, if it was longer sure but to wait a month...

I didn't realize the new application for the restricted was only 40 and a new photo, I thought it was still 80.

Well I have something to report back with so we'll see what he ends up doing. Either way new shooter joining the club soon! He may end up on here too.

To clarify, it's only 40 if you've applied for and received a pal in the last 3 years. So if he gets his pal now he will pay 80, then in say 3 months he applies for the rpal he will be charged an additional 40. If your doing your pal and rpal at once it will be 80.

In Ontario my Forms said it was $60 now for Pal or $80 for Both on the same form. I can't find anywhere that says $40 in 3 years to add RPal. just FYI
 
There is no literature on it but I just went through this myself. I got my pal 5 months ago then I submitted for my rpal 2 months ago. When the charge came through on my cc it was $40 for the rpal. I called and asked why and they told me about the discount and 3 year thing. As for original pal, you could be right about it being $60. I can't recall the charge for the original pal. I assumed it was 80 as well.
 
I was just wondering the same. I completed the firearm safety course a few weeks ago but didn't send in my form.
I intend to get my rpal.. BUT the next challenge is in april unless there's a cancellation.

If I understood this correctly, if I want to shoot longun (legally) I'd have to send my pal (60$), and pay the 40$ later to get the rpal?
Or do they issue you a pal, and "upgrade" it once the paperwork (for the course) is sent to them and processed?
 
If you send in and they issue your pal then you will need to resend in, the application forms as well as a new picture. You will pay $40 for the rpal as you have applied and received your pal within 3 years of your rpal application.

If you have sent in for a pal and it is in the processing stage, then you can have both pal and rpal issued at the same time for $80.
 
I'm new to all this. Can I assume from the "shorten pal"... thread that means to send the form in with the 80$, uncheck the box that I took the
"restricted" course (question 20) and calling them and let them know I'm awaiting the test?
 
I'll chime in and recommend that your friend go ahead and challenge the test now. Read through the online materials a few times and go for it. The practical is easier than with long guns in my opinion. If you understand long gun safety, you can understand pistol safety.

And if he waits until January, he needs to wait for the test results to get stamped and sent back, so there goes another 4-6 weeks.

In short, I'd challenge now, send in my PAL/RPAL application immediately to start the 28 day waiting period and send in my results as soon as they come back from Orillia.
