Hey guys. Im all set to take my class+test this month. Ive read up on everything. feeling good about it. The only thing Im wondering about is passing the background check. I have no history or criminal record. But last summer however I got way to drunk + mouthy and had police involved. They just took my info and told me to smarten up, couple of good dudes. So that might show up on a background check. also I have a kid brother who has been arrested, and is currently being sought. Think either of these will block me?

You drink "way too much", get "mouthy" to the point LEO's have to tell you to "smarten up".
If you can't responsibly control your booze / demeanour, can the authorities trust you will responsibly control a firearm…

You have a brother who is "being sought" by the authorities = has an outstanding warrant for arrest and on the run.
Looks like your bother needs to "smarten up".

Wow esp , way to jump on a guy. He has no control over his little brothers actions I would think and what you have never been drunk before dude? Lighten up he asked a fair question.
To the OP , just do the course and what is required of you , chances are with no criminal record you will be alright. It's worth a shot anyway right?

I wish it was... but a few too many barley pops and a bunch a rowdy boys got out of hand at a bonfire one night. Not like I was stealing cars.lol. its the first and only time ive been involved with law. As for that brother.. well. I learned a trade he didnt. soo.... thoughts? am I screwed? I just wanna go hunting with my uncle.

Just my opinion if you were not given a ticket or charged for your actions, then that should not show anything regarding background checks. As far as your brother goes, that has nothing to do with you going for your course. Just hope you learned a lesson from what you did , and a prayer out to your bro that he smartens up and sees the light. I won't comment on ESP, everyone has an opinion, his isn't mine. We've all done something dumb at some time. Good luck and don't stress it to much.

Ok I will lighten up…
OP you don't have a criminal record, you're not currently awaiting trial so you should be fine… read the questions on the application carefully and answer them truthfully.
And get that drinking under control, to much booze can ruin good people, don't let it ruin you.

You're right, OP should have as many handguns and shotguns as he likes, that way when he drinks "way to much" his brother can swipe them and be on the run and armed.

He said he it was his first time. You never had a few extra in your life? Seriously man. And as far as his brother so called " Swiping his guns and going on the run with them". This is why Ammo and guns are stored and locked separate with trigger locks in a good hard to pop gun storage. Glad your not the mayor or COF or nobody in Canada would be hunting IMHO.

I lightened up, and edited the comment.

I reeled in my drinking to just a few here and there. My brothers' been abusing it and gone down the tubes. bumming around doing nothing. He isnt some crazy ass biker on the run. He got 60days weekends for hanging around with some dingalings who suffer from a bad case of the dumb.

Thanks for the advice. I was almost going to cancel the test because I didnt want to waste 300$. You all make valid points. I didnt think it would explode like that. sry.

I'm not sure if it's possible, but I wonder if you could contact the good people out in Miramichi and have a background check run before doing the course?

I think you'll be fine. I had more than a couple encounters with the police prior to getting my pal and it was not an issue. My idiot sister was married to a neo-nazi who has been in and out of jail several times for pretty serious stuff. Also not an issue for me getting my PAL (though I haven't talked to her in over a decade).

However my younger brother is trying to join the EPS and the outlaw inlaws have been a bit of a roadblock.

$300 for the course? My wife was annoyed that hers is going to cost $80.

You should be fine although when i applied they did ask me if i was related to two people with the same last name who i had never heard of.

best advice answer the questions exactly as they are asked do not volunteer info that is not requested but always answer what is asked truthfully and politely.

They won't care as long as you weren't criminally charged with anything. The application doesn't ask if a cop has ever told you off it, asks if you've been charged with any offenses.
I've had a few nights like yours where the police may have had some choice words for me and it didn't make a difference in getting a PAL.

you should be ok. i know my wifes 2 brothers aren't allowed to have firearms from some criminal stuff they have done. and it didn't stop her from getting her rpal at all.

Update: Passed my written and practical 100%. Part of the application asks if youve ever been 'reported' to the police. I have a report on me from that party night. Hope the complainee didnt ham it up too bad. Anyways my instructor said that it souldnt matter but def. check the yes box to avoid problems.

I get my copies of proof of test+course back in two weeks and will be submitting my request for a pal. fingers crossed.

As mentioned previously "read the questions on the application carefully.."
