What is the procedure from when i complete the firearms safety course to getting my license?

If i complete the course when I am 17 can I just hold onto the certificate until im 18 and apply for a standard PAL rather than a minors PAL?

And lastly in general how long does the whole process take?

Since your in Ontario:

-Complete and pass the courses (or just challange the exams and pass)
-You course results are then sent to the Ontario CFO for verification
-They send you back a stamped copy of you course report (or reports in PAL and RPAL) - usually takes about 2 weeks.
-Fill out your licence app, get your photo, and the course reports in an envelope and send it in REGISTERED or EXPRESS mail so you have a tracking number.
-Once they have your app entered into their computers the mandatory 28 day cooling off period begins.
-During this time they will call you and your references (if applying for RPAL)
-Assuming everything is in order, it normally can take up to 45 days for you to have the licence in your hand.

I had my RPAL in had 34 days after sending the application in, but I have heard horror stories of it taking 8 or 9 months.

so if i want to go straight to my adult PAL can i take the course and do the steps you have provided as a minor in advance?

Yes, you just have to wait till you are 18 to submit the paperwork. There is no expiry unless you lose the papers.

so basically in preparation for my PAL all i can do prior to turning 18 would be complete the course?

correct, then send the forms the day after your bday.
