Is there anything I can do to prepare for IPSC while I wait for my PAL to arrive?
I have a SigSauer P320 Air Pistol (which is the same size/weight as the real one), Ben Stoeger’s DryFire Reloaded book, a timer,1/3 size dryfire targets and a competition belt and holster.
Do you think I should practice with what I have or do something else? I have heard recently on a bunch of podcasts that you should only practice with the real firearm... but that simply isn’t possible for quite some time.

I’m really keen to get started. 😄

Air pistols normally have different trigger feel then their firearm versions, Also no recoil. So other then some speed draw practice. Offer little training value.

I think you're too eager and forgetting alot of steps. You should get some trigger time in and learn the fundamentals of shooting. Before you do your black badge and start with IPSC.

Because without the basics. You will not complete the black badge course.

Go ahead and practice. You know full well when you get the real thing there’s a learning curve. Plenty of dry fire drills can be done with air soft.

Manny Brag tells stories about getting to GM status by practicing with airsoft in his office. Apparently people coming in would skate across the floor on the pellets.

With airsoft, you can practice a clean trigger prep and break while watching the sights. Accuracy. And that’s very useful for IPSC.

it is probably better to wait till you do the black badge course and learn the proper fundamentals before practicing anything.

Anyone is going to have a pretty hard time passing Black Badge with no practice beforehand.
Talk with members of your local club and see if you can get some range time with them.

When I started IPSC, my instructor always grilled in my brain, "speed is the byproduct of accuracy"

Retired years ago, and still believe it

Not to Hijack his thread, but I am correct to assume that when (of before you can) shoot IPSC , you are required to obtain your black badge?

I am interested in giving IPSC a whirl. Seems like a very intense sport, and loads of fun.

Yes, BB is mandatory if you want to compete in IPSC in Canada.

To the OP, kudos on wanting to practice but please practice correctly. Find a competent teacher near you. You can’t really see or know if you’re doing it correctly at an early stage. A trained set of eyes will help a lot. Unlearning bad habits or misconceptions will just delay your learning curve.

PS I PMed you a name of a CGNer near you a few weeks ago. He is a A class shooter and I call him Spock. He will make sure you get things right.

Will he teach someone without a PAL or firearm? I was looking at Silvercore with their handgun fundamentals course but they require you to have your license already.

Find out if your club does IPSC "club matches" ie non sanctioned, just at a club level practice. If so ask to observe one match to see how its done, help with taping, and set up. Make sure you have the proper gear when your ready to join in the practice fun. Be prepared to be schooled on basic safety and standard IPSC safety protocol. Myself and others in our area were encouraged to partake in about a years worth of "club matches" before our BB instructor ran us through the BB Course.
Your clubs MMV.

When I took Black Badge my instructor said he could take someone who had never handled a handgun (and had no bad habits to break) and they would pass if they were willing to learn.

My club doesn't allow me to "do" club level IPSC practice. I haven't competed in like 8 years.

So they passed them, even if they didn't have the skills ? I highly doubt, nobody that never handled a firearm before. Could pass the BB course.

The one thing I can say there are no guarantee you will pass a black badge course when you get your pal do as much training and shooting as possible with the gun you plan to compete with at least 2000 rounds. Then do the black badge course. Also youtube el presidente.
