Hi folks I'm thinking about getting back in the prone TR game. Anyone shooting a Savage Palma in 308 with 155s? Can it be competitive out of the box? Are there sight mounting brackets or would i have to make up something? Seems like a reasonable price if it's competitive. Thanks

There is a search function that you can use to look for key words in a forum. Here's a few threads that are relevent.

Try using the search function and you might get all the answers you need. Start with the search function, Jerry (Mystic Precision) may be able to give you all the details you need if the search doesn't. Searching through the forum look for posts by guys like Maynard, rnbra-shooter, and other guys who shoot competitively, note the post count of a member. Maynard does this kind of shooting for sure, a few others as well. It's not gosple but you can tell the old dogs right away by the number and quality of the posts. I'm guessing you know enough to filter out some of the usless stuff. If you still feel lost you could pm one of them.

Palma...Always brings to mind, "this is my rifle this is my gun"...

Shoot one, probably, Out of the box - no, bases, can be arranged, the first time I made a Canadian Rifle Team was with a Savage (and never used one again! although I still have that one!).

I've owned quite a few Savage actioned Palma rifles over the years and they shoot well.
I like them, and just bought one of their newer rifles - haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but she's all ready to go with a reliable set of irons on the back and a new porter front site on the muzzle!:dancingbanana:

Thanks for the help guys. Ian back in the 80s I had a Sportco and a Musgrave set up on your stocks. I still have a modified #4 with an Envoy barrel and canjar trigger on a Robertson stock. It really worked with ivi. but that tight barrel and light action are not likely a good idea now. lol I'm just compleating a coyote rifle now so I will soon find out if I can still squeeze a trigger. I feel like I am waking up after a 20 year sleep.

Bed it, do a bolt timing if you want a lighter smoother function.

If you are ok with a 6 to 10oz trigger, the factory target accutrigger will serve you well.

many new gen Savage comp rifles are 1/2 min capable so should be very useable.

at least to start. big one would be ergonomics - does the stock fit?

Jerry

As I'm sure you know, but, there is a .5kg minimum pull weight in TR, so the light pull that the accu-trigger is capable of isn't worth anything in TR. I would recommend a trigger upgrade anyway. I've used the accu-trigger and like it, but upgraded to a Rifle Basix SAV-2 and it felt MUCH better (If you ended up buying the Savage). JMO

I have never shot the Savage Palma but I am sure they will work great for getting back into the game after 20 years. Like any rifle you would buy or build for this game you might need to do some work on it to make it right for you. That's why they make wood files and Bondo. I had a Rieben stock that I fought with for about a year. I ended up making peace with the stock and changing my position slightly and things are still working. (I did not end up taking a wood rasp to it).

I think the trigger weight is 1 Kg for TR (not sure) but I keep mine at 3.5 lbs (Bisley weight).

I'll bet you kicking yourself now,for selling that Musgrave. If you can find another one, grab it up.

You should to show up at the range and speak with TR shooters. There are lots of geat deals for those showing interest.

Interesting thread. Nice to see the big dogs weigh in. Seems no-one is endorsing Savage, and Musgrave is the only alternative recommended. Reminds me of when we (wife & I) started. Musgrave was recommended to us. We bought something else, ... maybe a mistake ... we still had fun (with Angels & Neilsens). Keep in mind.. in any highly competitive sport, the new point-getter quickly takes over & the Savage Palma doesn't seem to be it (if it was a go-to gun, the big dogs would all have it as the gun is not the most expensive part of the sport). Also, someone local has been trying to sell a Savage Palma & hasn't had much luck. So, to be blunt... much as I think highly of Savage, take a pass on the Savage for this sport, even as a temporary gun to re-enter the sport. And even though there are geat deals out there ... be careful ...

Jerry, I don't understand what you mean by "bolt timing" can explain?

The fact is that RPA products dominate fullbore. Of course any quality single shot wil do and there are plenty of Musgraves used and recommended, as Maynard has pointed out. Fullbore shooters, like any discilpine, have their own personal networks and are always willing to advise as to good kit.

There are plenty of RPA's in the fullbore game. Barnards are another one with a strong showing. You still see Musgraves (rnbra-shooter use one to win the Gov.Gen's a couple years ago) Second place in last years Canadian TR Championship was shooting a Musgrave (Same rifle he has used a couple times at the Commonwealth Games)

If you can find a used Musgrave expect to pay between $500-$1200 depending on how new the barrel is and what stock it is in and what sights may or may not be on it. There are also other rifles that are worth looking into, Swings, Witchita's maybe even a Sportco if it has a Neilsen adaptor already installed. Remington's can also work very well if set up with a good prone stock and tuned trigger and good barrel.

On the other hand if you want to build on something like an RPA, Barnard, CG Millennium, INCH action look at spending $1200 and up just for an action. It does not take long to get up into the $4000-$5000 price range on a build.

Maynard, good points. Mr. Whidden of the US Palma team was or is shooting a Win M70. Fullbore guys are often narrow-minded about kit.

Peter
