I have seen a few instructions for paper patching that say to bring it up untill the point of the nose starts, so that only paper touches the rifling, but I have seen pictures that show paper to just past the drive band for nose riding bullets.
Just wondering if that is a good option. Looking for near jacket velocity,2300ish, for a deer and black bear hunting load, in a 303 smle, with lee 312-185 and 312-155, sized to 314 after paper and grease applied

When I tried the 185, was difficult to close the bolt, so I think the throat is not shot out, so the nose rider would likely be the right size on its own.

Any other tips would be appreciated. I haven’t tried the 155 yet, just got the mold, and may also try the 309 -230

My best accuracy was with a Lee 170 grain bullet designed for the 30-30.
That was sized to .314” and hand seated into a previously fired and unsized casing. When the bullet was seated, the paper would contact the lands and seat the bullet the last little bit into the case. Harder bullets shot tighter groups.
My hunting loads were with a 9 BHN bullet crimped lightly with the Lee factory crimp die. The crimp was to prevent separation of the bullet and case when unloading. When that happened, I had to push the bullet out of the throat using a cleaning rod.
The crimp and softer bullet opened up my groups by more than double. I still managed to harvest a young elk with that load,
