parallax? could it matter to a moose?

You have been given some good advice here that has answered your original query and also a little CGN coaching. To recap, don't fret over the parallax of your scope concentrate on consistency when shooting and good range estimation. The most distant moose I have taken was in the 400yd range out of a canoe. I remember just trying to keep the cross hairs above the vicinity of the front quarters. Hit it twice and it did not go that far. My 30-06 is sighted in 2"high at 100yds which for moose unless your trying to take out his left eye means I can hold right on with my reloads and be hitting vitals out to about 250+ yds. In the 43 yrs I have been hunting moose not once has the parallax of my scope come into question.

There are a lot of very good and knowledgeable folks on CGN. It is also very easy to say things on a open forum that one would not say to a persons face due to the anonymity in place. So you have to be a bit thick skinned and not take some of these folks seriously at times. You will get to know who is who at the zoo after a while. Hopes this helps you out a bit.

max error = 0.5 * objective diameter * (range to target - range to focus) / range to focus
So, for example, if the scope were parallax free at 100 yards and the moose was shooting at 400 yards, max error would be 0.5 * 40mm * (400yd - 100yd) / 100yd, or 60mm (2.36").

Bear in mind that this is MAXIMUM POSSIBLE ERROR due to parallax. To even achieve this small POA/POI variance would mean that you would have to hold your eye as close to the edge of the exit pupil as possible, while still seeing the image. In actual practice, the error you might see would be far less than this already trivial amount.

mrgoat, why would you take that shot? I personally would have waited until the moose had beached his canoe and stepped out of it.

I'm here all week!:)

thank you mrgoat and of coarse mr moose, lesson learned.im glad vortex now sent the bdc instead.by the ao scope.they are awesome by they way(vortex) noquestions or arguments.its not the most expensive gear but it beats shipping a return scope to china.if i get a couple big nugs prospecting this year i,ll shop around for something with as good a warrenty but a bit lighter weight. thanks
