A buddy of mine asked me to look over his new purchase, a used Para Ordanance .45. I'm familiar with the 1911 Colt series, and the disassembly seemed the same. When I depressed the return spring plunger to rotate the barrel locking piece, it would only turn about 30 deg. and so wouldn't clear the plunger. Does he need a special wrench to turn it to unlock? Is is just sticky and needing some brute force, or am I doing something wrong? I removed the mag, cocked it, took out the retaining pin, and did everything that works on the 1911, but the front piece just wouldn't turn out. Can one of the gun gurus give me some advice? I told him to write to the factory to get an owners manual (one didn't come with the pistol).

Turn the barrel bushing the other way or you might have to use a bushing wrench if it is tight

Some are two piece guide rods and don't have a hex key in front. You have to hope it comes off easy without marring it with a pliers. Those rubber band type wrenches work good.

Then just push in the plunger like any other 1911.

His new purchase would have come with instructions on how to do that. Also this link could help http://attrition.org/technical/firearms/45disassemble/index.html

Thanks for the input

Mike, I think I'd mentioned that he bought it second hand. I checked the website, and I was doing it correctly. From the pics, I definitly have to get him the wrench, as it seems that the tool both depresses the spring and gives the torque to remove the bushing. I would imagine that either him or me could order one from ParaOrdnance.

Yes now I see the used part. I can't help thinking that some gun store in the GTA must have the correct tool. I wonder if an open ended wrench with some tape in the jaw might work. Push down to compress the spring and turn gently without scratching.
