Good evening Ladies and Gents,

I recently picked up this rifle from another gentleman gunnut - it was identified as a Parker Hale African Lightweight in 375H&H.

Is anyone else familiar with this model? 1100, 1200?

I gather that many were made off of Santa Barbara manufactured Mauser 98 receivers. Would that be the same for a long magnum action like this?

Many thanks,

Your rifle is a Parker Hale 1100M Afican Magnum. The actions were made by santa barbara, finished at PH with a PH barrel. Looks like your bolt shroud has been replaced, does the rfile hace a side safety? Nice find btw, the 1100 series is very sweet. Let me know if you want to sell it....

Did PH's ever come matte blued like that? The 1100 lightweight and 1100 deluxe I have are both that super black high polished blue finish. Also have the fully adjustable trigger's and side safety's.

Awesome - many thanks for the info! Glad to know it's a 1100 - will help with the research.

As for the safety, it only has the swing shroud safety (assuming correct terminology...?) ->

Yes, it is a much prettier rifle than I anticipated for the cost! Even alongside a tripod kitty...

I've read on random forums that the triggers were problematic. Was this just for adjustments, or were there any reliability concerns?

The over the top safety is intuitive and easy to use with irons sights, but it will pose a difficulty with a low mounted scope. The rifle will be more versatile when sighted with a variable low power scope, so you could consider changing to a M-70 style safety, or just not use the safety when the rifle is scoped. Its not a big deal to chamber a round just when you intend to shoot, or you can lift the bolt handle out of battery, holding it forward with your thumb, when carrying the rifle in both hands, like when stalking through the thick stuff.

Every one of my factory wood stocked rifles that has been more powerful than a .30/06 rifle, has split the stock unless the rifle has been bedded, so check the bedding of the rifle needs attention.

That safety is designed to clear a low mounted scope so it will be fine. That does look to be a Santa Barbera

As for the trigger, the comment may have been referring to the 'military trigger', which is a very primitive device for sure. If you have the Parker Hale adjustable trigger, you will be very happy once you get it set where you want it, assuming it is not already there.

This Rifle is equipped with the PH low swing safety, which only swings up about 30degrees. It will not interfere with a scope.
