Just picked up an odd PH sight. Marked 5E. It has an adapter on it to mount on the rear PH scope base. From what I can learn was used on the C3 rifle and the Parker Hale 1200 TX. Will post pics, soaking in Kroil at the minute. How common are these? First one I have come across.

These are less common than the PH 5A, 5B or 5C, (SMLE, P'14, No. 4) but not exactly rare. Back up iron sight for C3. Convenient way of mounting a target sight on any rifle for which you can obtain a PH scope base
Does the sight have a serial number engraved on it? Might be the serial of the rifle with which it was used.

Thanks for the info. Have to check when its done soaking. Also came with a pill bottle full of front sight circular inserts with different apertures. I'm assuming for the same rifle.

The 5E could be mounted on a variety of brackets and was intended to meet the wider variety of receivers TRs were being built on by the late '70s.

The adapter bracket on this one is for PH base. I saw images online of an adapter plate with two holes to fit the holes in rear receiver bridge as well.

Mike - you have a rear target sight to a Parker Hale M82 that a fixes to a rear steel scope base. It was found on the later M82 1200TX's. C3 sight is similar in appearance however the base release knob and rear rear sight bridge release is different. Ron

Last summer, I acquired a Parker Hale "Model 1200TX" rifle in 7.62 NATO - top of barrel is stamped "PALMA Trophy Match 1969" - I was able to track down the son of one of the shooters from that competition - he still has his Dad's rifle from then - appears identical. From somewhere, I got told that 60 rifles were made up by Parker Hale for that competition. From Colin Cheshire book, "The History and Records of the PALMA Match" - page 4.128 lists names of Canadian Team members and some details about ammo used, etc. at that 1969 competition. So I know the name of one shooter, that year, who did NOT use this rifle - so far have never discovered which shooter used it - out of the 60 - was 20 shooters from USA, GB and Canada.

The rear sight body and eyepiece appears identical to the one shown in your pictures, but the mounting bracket is different - has two holes and screws in on rear receiver bridge where scope base holes would go. Only markings that I find, beyond the PH logo's, is "PH5B2" on the cross arm - where yours says "PH5E". I also have the A22 and A28 Parker Hale scope bases, and both RALS.3 and RAHS.3 rings, should I ever decide to install a scope on it. I have been lead to believe that the early C3 rifles used Kahles 6X scopes, which had 26 mm bodies - so Canadian Forces used the RALS.4 or RAHS.4 rings - at the shooter's preference for scope height.

As has been noted there were two PH5E sight brackets for the mauser action; the one with two holes for mounting on rear two holes and the one like mine that clamped directly onto PH scope base. Some snooping online found mention that the PH5E with the adapter for the PH scope base was paired with a higher front sight to compensate.

Hi Mike, I just stumbled across this thread by chance. I was looking closely at your picture and thought “that looks like my sight” well it is, haha. Funny how things work out. I just received the sight in a trade. IMG_7383.jpeg
