I thought I poster but???.is the 1200c a good starting point for a build. The 2 I have are 30-06 & 300 win mag. I like the clip but it may not be needed. I would be looking at some 6mm variant. Am I better off to sell & start with the regulars (Sav-Rem) thanks to those in the know. I,m looking for 800-1000 yd fun just a play thing :) AJ

Hi. You'll likely have to start with a barrel blank and have a custom barrel made. It'd certainly cost you less to rebarrel an American made rifle. Going to any 6mm precludes using the .30-06 action. Way too long. So is the .300 mag for a .243 Win or 6mm Rem. Even moreso for a 6mm BR. Mag well adaptors can be made though.
Which 6mm matters. The 6mm BR would be the one to look into for long range shooting. Holds 600 and 1,000 yard records. You may want to go here for a whole bunch of 6mm info. Add the W's. .6mmbr.com/index.html
This will be of some use to you one way or the other. It's always handy to have an exploded drawing. Even if you do sell.

The army thought it was good enough back in the day. That's the action that was originally used in the C3's. FYI the 1200C will accept C3 5 rd mags if you can find them.

I will one day build a C3 ish rifle in 6.5 Swede. Already have the old wood stock, just need to find an action and barrel when I have the cash.

You can certainly use a Mauser action to make up a recereational target rifle. The PH magazine system will limit cartridge choice if the rifle is to be a repeater. You also have 2 different sized boltfaces. If you were to convert the '06, you might consider a 6.5 cartridge, rather than a 6mm, particularly if you want a repeater. 6.5x55 or 6.5 - '06 would be worth consideration. Fitting a barrel to a Mauser action should cost no more than fitting one to any other action.

I have used a P-H for a while;)

I can tell you this.

You can build a P-H that will fight the good fight against other 30 cals. if you drive it right. If you choose to get into the high speed low drag side of things in the 6 and 6.5 world you will have a rifle that can't keep up.

There are too many factors that hurt the P-H;
Long action
Very long lock time
Bolt has no Borden bumps to tighten it up as the bolt raceway has too much clearance.

However, if you use them for what the work best for you will be happy. It takes alot to actually screw a P-H up to where it won't function.

Custom

If you want an accurate custom rifle I would suggest you put the question to the gunsmith that builds the rifle for you. Most smiths will suggest a REMINGTON 700 action to start. Bill
