Hi there, I picked up a Parker hale but it needs a new recoil pad, it currently has a slip on with some tape to keep the stock in good order. Any suggestions on a recoil pad? I am hoping to avoid and grind to fit options as I’m not currently set up for that. Could take it in and have it done by a smith if that’s the last option. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance :)

Hmatt - Probably the easiest would be to find another slip on type that fits better...does your PH have a buttplate on it?

Another option would be a Cabela's or other retail place. They sell a wide variety of Pachmayer or other screw-on type recoil pads. If you trace the outline of yours, more than likely there will be a size or profile to fit reasonably well if you didn't want to trim it. The screw spacing can be different, but you can drill a new hole in the stock. May not be a bad idea to put a wood plug in the old hole and glue it in, just for stability.

One warning - some butt pads come with screws that are for synthetic rather than wood stocks. Wood screws usually have a pretty wide thread pitch.

Nice PH. What caliber is it in?

Thanks for the info. I tried limb savers website to see if I could find one in such a manner. But I couldn’t find any templates with measurements to compare to this rifle. It’s 30-06 and I don’t think it’s seen very many rounds, I got it for a great deal from a mentor of mine. He never shot it but the recoil pad fell apart in a safe so it obviously hasn’t had much use, the bore is mirror shiny. Also need to choose a scope for it. The scope currently on it would be better suited as a prop; glass is fudged.

I have actually installed a Limbsaver (Simms) "precision fit" recoil pad on a .30-06 1200C. It fits a whole lot of other stocks as well.

I was looking for the model number but must have thrown away the blister pack.

Measure the width and height of the butt stock and you will find it on their website.

However, replacing the original hard plastic butt plate will change LOP by at least an inch, which was uncomfortable for me. I ended up cutting back the stock and installed a grind to fit Limbsaver.

I still have the original butt plate which is in good condition without cracks or chips if you need/want a butt plate.

It's slightly curved and measures 33.95 mm in width by 123.52 mm in height.

Brownells sells every color pad you can think of, don't be scared of grind to fit, it can be done without messing up the wood.
70's-80's era was lots of hand fitting, PH used alot of SILE Italian stocks, it's possible a take off pad will match right up, but as a betting man I'd wager there is going to be some fitting regardless.
At the end of the day, it's a $400-$500 rifle, I wouldn't go to crazy dumping money into it.
Some had brown pads, only ones Ive seen with red were the Lightweight versions, so hard to say what color is right for the one you got.

Stock pad was a light brownish. I’m gonna get a PH one I located and hope for the best..

Nothing nicer than a decelerator pad nicely installed by a competent 'smith'. They look good and last...

If one is set up for doing pads it's about a 20 minute job... when I was working I would fit and grind a pad in just about anytime it came in... Decels were about 50 bucks and labour was about 40 back then. Cutting the stock and making it dead flat and the pad dead flat took the most time.

It's not really a big deal to do grind to fit pads. Belt sander and maybe some engenuity. your good. Anything is possible Right.
