parker hale safety question

The PH actions were Spanish Mausers, I believe, so most probably came with a sliding safety, but I'm sure some were ordered, or customized to have 3 position safeties.

I had one on my PH 30/06 mauser action w/ wing safety. I liked it when it had open sights but with a scope the safety would not fully extend this made the gun unsafe. I had a gunsmith put a Timmen trigger and slide safety. MUCH BETTER.

Depending on the vintage and model, PH rifles had either a Mauser style wing safety, or a side safety, which was part of the PH trigger mechanism. If a M70 style safety is present, I would suggest that it has been retrofitted. If you look at Tradeex's webite, you will see Mauser bolt sleeves with safeties fitted, ready to install. PH rifles being essentially modified '98 Mausers, this sort of unit could be readily installed.

The wing safty locks the firing pin. The slider locks the trigger. Although I don't like or trust safties, the locked bolt is probably a bit safer.

I usully carry a bolt rifle with the bolt handle lifted. An open bolt is safer than a loaded and cocked rifle.

A nice feature of the wing saftey is that if you forget to take it off, it will block your view of open sights.

The wing safety was fine for open sights but with a scope even with raised rings it was unsafe to say the least. "With a loaded gun and safety on the gun is safest with the barrel always pointed in a safe direction". Enjoy your PH mine has given me many enjoyable hunting seasons!
Cheers

I had a Parker hale wing style safety on my Swedish Mauser sporter and the first trip to the range showed me how it liked to fire the rifle when it was turned off while the bolt was cocked.

I took it off and I found at a guns show an original Swedish Mauser safety so I put this on the rifle, giving me full functionality and safety of the bolt again.

Screw the scope.
I'll put irons or a red dot on this one.
