I just looked at a 1945 Long Branch with a Parker-Hale adjustable rear sight, including a neat dial diopter with different size peep holes :)

How rare is this Parker-Hale diopter sight, and did it come with the this sight from the factory ?

Also, there was a hole drilled on the left side of the metal band that holds the stock. Any idea what that was for ?

Any idea for the value of this LB ?

The rear sight is a later addition. Assuming it is a Parker Hale PH5C, $250 is about the going price on Ebay. They are not that common, but they are not that rare, either.

As to your other questions - PHOTOS!!!! Value of the rifle depends on if it is still in military configuration or has been Budda'd, remaining finish on the metal, bore and chamber condition, any dings, splits and/or cracks in the woodwork, etc.

Thanks for the info about the value of the PH diopter rear sight. The owner of this LB told me he picked it up about 25 years ago for $ 25.-

After learning about the dramatic increase of a otherwise complete and unalterede LB, his wife demanded her husband to sell it right away.

However, I told the now happy owner of this near mint condition LB, that it is easier to find a new wife than a LB in this fine condition :)

What is the value LB in near mint condition ?

Anywhere form $500- $1200. A while back somebody here bought a longbranch with the most beautiful wood I have ever seen on a rifle & I think he paid north $1000.

If the rifle has had a hole drilled in the left side of the butt socket, that will surely hurt the value. Probably a PH5A sight was installed. This is the model for the SMLE, sometimes they were fitted to No. 4 rifles. The correct PH sight for a No. 4 is either a PH4 or a PH5C.

I've seen many No4's fitted with a 5A sight. If there's a hole in the left side of the butt sockett partially in the SN then it had a 5A on it. I'd purchase one of these and maintain authenticity. Also may have had a Centrol sight on it. post a picture and we can tell for sure. Ron
