Here's a pic of the 2 different decals side by side. The real one is on the right, and the obvious fake is on the left.
Guys should almost save the pic to keep as a reference. As you can see the gold is a "metal foil" and can't be replicated all that easy. At least by me .
Ahh...I was wondering because I had the chance to see a collection of WWII handguns in pristene condition and most had the barrel stampings, serial #'s in white. They had been in a museum collection..I'd hate to think the stampings were painted white to make them easier to read. There were lugers, broomhandle mausers, P-38's, 1911's..
If the frame and slide serial numbers are not engraved through the finish into the raw steel, then your pistol has undoubtedly been refinished. Here is a No. 2 pistol which has its original parkerized finish - having been in private hands since about 1945/46:
The other "whitened" markings you mention having seen are often done (with such substances as chalk, crayon, white grease pencil, or whatever) to make the markings stand out clearly, for display or picture-taking purposes, but as others have already noted, that is not the reason that these two serial numbers are "in the white" on an origianl-condition Inglis pistol.
Thanks for the education folks. I guess mine has been refinished then because the serial numbers are not "in the white".
Oh-well..it ain't a safe queen anyway!
Exactly, I was wondering if the serials were in the white. (I realise this is a little off topic, but since I started it I'm gonna see it through to the end). A big reason I thought -angels- Inglis was refinished was that I could not conceive of any responsible Canadian militaria collector putting a decal on one that is in such pristine condition. So are my fears misplaced? How easy is it to remove a decal like that? Just watter and it slides off? or is there more to it?
Exactly- An application of water and the decal will just slide off.
The original decals were made of a very fragile cellulose material by the Decalomania Company wheras the new decals are made of a much thicker material and are printed on an inkjet printer. The repro decals are meant to give a facsimilie of the real thing for display purposes. They are perfect for guns that are shooters as they can be easily replaced if damaged.
If you have ever seen an original decal (Kold's comparison above is an excellent example) you cannot mistake the repro for an original.
BTW: From the "look" of Striker's Inglis above I would be inclined to think it may have been British issue.
