I've just read an article warning not to screw a full length (FL) sizer up to only neck size.
I'm starting back at it with a few years off and used to neck size by moving my FL sizer up until it lost contact with the shoulder for a 25-06.
Now I'm going at it in 7.62x39 bolt, 308win mod 88 lever and 25-06 bolt.
Since I'm not a fan of FL resizing at all should I,
Absolutely get a neck sizing die or
Carry on with partial sizing?

if you are only loading for one rifle in that cartridge, I would set my FL die depending on use. In most cases for a bolt action I would partial size while still maintaining easy chambering, especially for a hunting rifle.

Your method is fine. Once in a while you'll have to FL resize to bump your shoulders back. - dan

I think I remember starting off with a LEE reloading kit complete with a press and with a set of dies for about $100 or less. In the instructions with the dies it stated that if you only wanted to neck size, to bottom the die out on the shell holder use a dime to set the gap.
These days I FL resize everything with a .002" shoulder bump. Too many rifles of the same caliber even though they were all chambered with the same reamer.

I have three rifles, all in the same caliber (6.5 x 55), the the generous throats in the M98 and M96 rifles means that they are not picky, however the SE chamber in my Zastava M70 is a different story. I use a lee collet die to neck size, and keep my brass separate for the Zastava. With the collet die I find I get more life out of my brass, I have to trim case length less often, brass thickness remains more constant, and cartridges are more concentric. Seperating brass is no big deal as I load only 85 and 90 gr HP and 140 gr HPBT match bullets for the Zastava; the two surplus rifles get PPU 158 or 156 (I would have to look at the bag), JSP bullets.

How mu about a tiny 222 rem, does neck sizing with a FL die work there or would a neck sizer work better there?

A neck sizer should give better accuracy. Basically if I have the neck sizers I use them instead of a full length die. Hunting rounds I fully resize. Shooting at paper trying to get small groups I’ll neck size. Pick a route and test it to see what works best for you.

I partially full ( neck size )length size the vast majority of my rifles from .222 to 9.3x72R with absolutely no issues using full length dies.
The dies ate adjusted to just barely bump the shoulder

This (neck size) comment is contradictory when your FL die is bumping the shoulder... nothing partially here. It is full length sizing.

Full length w/neck are altered but to a partial extent with die set high, instead of full crush
'slight shoulder bump' is tough to get accurate and consistent, given brass flex and spring may not be consistent

It' not sizing all the way down the case though .
Same cartridges will not interchange to my other .303's for instance, nor my other .280 unless it is sized down more.
I guess you could call it partial full length sizing.
These are on my hunting rifles as well not my match rifles.

I think if you are touching the shoulder with your FL die, that die is sizing all the way down the case as it is capable of.

Maybe it depends on the dies?

I make a habit of sizing to just touch the shoulder on fired rounds from the same chamber.

I believe it takes at least .005 shoulder set back to completely full length resize.
