Was wondering if anyone knew what the partridge hunting around marten river ontario area was like.A few of us are thinking of heading up there for some bird hunting and fishing. Due to illnesses and the boys getting older they are not to interested in moose hunting anymore but would still like to get away. Also if anyone knows is there lots of gravel or logging roads able to drive with 2 wheel drive trucks.
I just came back from a week on the river, paddled upriver from Marten River PP & then over into Wicksteed Lake & then all the way up the Lake - camped on both shores, different nights - did a fair bit of scouting around (with my dog), and I didn't see a single one. Didn't look promising. Fair number of hares & good bear sign, but grouse seem to be pretty thin this year, in that area anyway.
Bass & walleye FANTASTIC though.
There aren't a whole lot of access roads, of any kind, between Marten River and Temagami Access Road - they kinda come-and-go, depending on whether someone's logging a particular section or not. There's Tonomo Road, that goes in towards Jumping Caribou lake and Red Squirrel Road up closer to Temagami. Maybe have a look at the west side, over towards Obabika - I know there's at least one halfway-decent track going in to that lake, from the south.
Remember you can only hunt west of Hwy 11 - the land to the east around Marten River is Nipissing Game Preserve (which is HUGE...).
Thanks for the info,I called a lodge up there and they didn't sound real optimistic about the bird hunting either.Oh well continue searching. We are in Grey county and the boys don't want to go much more than 5-6 hours.
