I bought a 590s 20" a bit ago and ended up with a 14" entire barrel assembly (barrel, mag tube, and firend with rails) for really cheap. I was going to just swap back and forth, but I am lazy :).

Been looking around to see if I could find a cheap beater Mossberg to swap the barrel assembly onto. It got me thinking, can you swap these parts onto a 500 or Macerick 88? I was under the impression you could with the 500, but not sure about the Maverick 88. Any advice would be appreciated.

A quick look online says the barrel mount is different between the 590 and the 500 and related series. The 500 mounts the barrel with a bolt on the end of the Mag, the 590 has a ring, allowing easier addition of an extension tube on the mag.

Any further interchange (given that you have the whole front end), is going to require a little experimentation on your part.

Just saying, but Mossberg is not likely to give out the info just on liability concerns, but I cannot really see their design department, changing what has worked, for what they think might work, as far as the basic dimensions of how the mag tube mounts, and the like.

But you are pretty much in territory well beyond what most will tread, which usually amounts to just swapping the barrel across different 'same' platforms.

The action bars on a Maverick 88 are pinned on while on most 500s and the 590 the action bars are part of a tube that the forend is held on by a castle nut. The barrel nuts on the 500 and Maverick 88 are the same. As long as it's the same magazine tube length, they will interchange.
