we have both a high quality digital camera and photo printer. should we take a snapshot of ourselves with the white background and submit that, or spend the $12 or whatever ridiculous fee it is for a passport photo?

what did you do?

I happened to need a new passport photo at the same time I was getting my PAL, so I got both done at the same time. The required measurements are slightly different between the passport and PAL photos so make sure you send the right one. I got mine done at Costco for something like $6. If you have the proper gear to take and print your own photo and crop to the right dimensions there is no reason you can't do it yourself.

I had the hardware to do it myself but I just got so sick of procrastinating that I decided to just get it professionally done by Blacks for 15 bucks, they gave me two copies so I used the second one for the RPAL.

Did it myself. Used a digital camera, cropped the picture in Photoshop to the dimensions they wanted, and printed it on photo paper. Bit tedious, but I'm sure doing it yourself wouldn't be a big deal if you don't want to pay the passport photo fees.

I have done it for others cropped the picture to the dimensions they want. But for my own, I didn't get around to it so went to Costco and got passport photos for about $6.

as long as its the correct size it should be ok.

my friend took my RPAL photo and his wife did some "fit to size" magic on her computer.....as far as CFC is concerned i have a cone head, but it makes for a laugh whenever i pull it out.

I had mine done at Walmart for $12. When the lady saw the example in the application instructions she new right away it was for a firearms licence and sized it accordingly. It is a different size than a passport photo.

I used my digi cam and printed it off on my printer.. but I had to buy some really good quality printing paper; the regular paper looked like crap and was flimsy. I still don't know if its good enough though because I just sent away for my PAL/RPAL about a week ago

Strange... Back in 02', I needed passport pics and the backside had to be stamped by the photgrapher. Obviously this is no longer the case....:(

No it's still the case, I just went through that fiasco about 2 months ago, unless it's changed since then, which I doubt they still have to stamp it. For some reason the passport office wanted two copies of the photo as well.

For my firearms pic I just went to a local photoshop paid the 12 bucks and called it a day, I wasn't able to use my Passport pic due to the fact I wear glasses, and the firearms licence requires you to wear them if you need them apparently.

I just used an old passport picture I had lying around. I simply trimmed it to the dimensions indicated and sent it in when I renewed. No problems.

I printed out a digital photo of myself that was taken at Christmas, and fixed the background in photoshop. It was a fairly high resolution shot and the print out looked good, but on my RPAL it came out looking kinda grainy. For the previous one I used a passport photo from Wal-Mart. Not the best photo of myself but the image was sharp on my license. They won't let you smile nowadays on a passport photo, but I've got a big sh!t eating grin on my RPAL.

This must be a Quebec thing, because it has never been a CFC requirement. I used a high school photo for my first one a few years back, and took my own for my renewal, which didn't even quite meet their specs (my head was too small) but they renewed it and put my photo on the license without issues.

At 11pm I walked in from the garage after changing a leaf spring on the truck(torches, impact gun, cursing and 5 hours of frustration) and remembered I needed a pic to send with my RPAL the next day. Got the wife to snap 1 digital pic in front of a clear spot on the wall just before she went to bed.

Next day I took it to the local Kodak store and printed out wallet size pics on the machine which just happen to match the CFC requirements. Not only was it easy, only cost me 1 buck with tax, and I had 5 extra pics, but I have an RPAL with a photo of me that should scare any reasonable person into not selling me a gun. Good thing I buy most of my guns here on CGN :D

I used my own for my renewal.

Hey, who's the guy who came back with a mohawk on his PAL?

Edit: Found it!
