Patternmaster chokes

I have purchased a Beretta xtrema shot gun recently. I would like to put on a Patternmaster choke. Does anyone out there have experience with these chokes. Have you used the "long range" or "extended" choke ? I will be primarily hunting Canada Geese and using steel shot of course. Not sure of what size of steel shot and what size of shell ( 3'' or 3 1/2'' ) has worked best for other hunters. PM me if you have any advice on this. Thanks!!

A number of my buds use these chokes, and I think I might try out a Wad Wizard for the upcoming season too.

Apparently you need to actually sit down and pattern a few different loads through your gun to get the most out of the choke. I guess thats pretty much like every gun but they really push on you doing this. Hope this helps and good luck this fall!

I've used the Patternmaster (PM) as well as Wad Wizzard SWAT12 (WW) and Terror .675 choke tubes with my SBEII. I've actually found the PM to be the worst of the 3. Not only is it loud on the people I'm hunting with (ported) it throws the worst patterns with loads over 1400fps (I prefer 1550fps loads). I like the WW for when the birds are landing in the decoys and shots are <25 yards - it opens up the pattern quickly. If the birds are decoy shy and shots are out past 35 yards I screw in the Terror .675. If I was a better shot I would just leave in the Terror as it throws the nicest patterns but <35 yards you either baseball the bird or completely miss.

Which one would work good, and be strong enough with Buckshot and slugs?

Last spring on a course we played with a 20" 870 that had a Patternmaster choke, 25m shots were all around the size of a grapefruit (I can't recall exactly) with standard 8 pellet buckshot loads....in comparison the similar barrels without the choke were lucky to keep half the pellets on a B-27 target at that distance. From what I saw it worked well. The instructor said he shoots slugs no problem.

Cheers

My bud has a PM on his Extrema 2 and in the late gosoe season #3 Kents were crushing birds..I plan on getting a Wad Wizard if I can get either a new barrel or a new semi

Sweet, thanx for the range info.
I've been thinking about these for a few years now, but wasn't sure.
And they are quite the investment once you get the gunsmith finished with the barrel etc.

Prob' still a no go with Bear bangers though. :D

Wad Wizard makes a very similar choke but with no porting and a somewhat better reputation.

You are definitely right on the money Ike, the patterns were about the size of a grapefruit. The only thing that was tighter was the hornady buckshots loads.

I shoot buckshot almost exclusively and the new tight patterning buckshot loads are the main reason I never went for one of these chokes or custom barrel work.

I have a .675 Terror on my Nova and just love how it patterns with 3" Kent steel loads. It is the only thing I will use for Geese. I patterned with different chokes and found that the Terror was the only one that didn't have the centre blown out. It seems to hold well out to 40-45 yards. I am also finding a lot less damage to my birds if i can get a good bead on the cockpit.
